Still recovering from an operation so benchwork only at the mo'.

Using my Makita die grinder with Roloc discs always ends up mullering them as the die grinder runs at 25,000 revs. Rolocs are fine on air die grinder at around 10,000 revs, so slowing the die grinder to something around 10-15,000 revs should do the job. So with this in mind, I bought this cheapanese PWM controller and built it into a plastic box that I had kicking around.

This is the finished item. Description says that it handles 2000W. With my experience of Cheapanese electronics, I thought it quite likely that the magic smoke will escape at that load so won't use it on anything near that. The die grinder is only 400W, so hopefully the controller will live.

The ultra short lead is so that the box will dangle just below the workshop power points, which are quite high on the wall, so I'm hoping that the box and the delicate potentiometer knob will be clear of workshop rough and tumble. On a quick test with the die grinder it seems to do the job OK.

How does that work out of interest?

Changes the hertz or voltage?

Hi,

I've just made a woodturning lathe center steady whilst it's poured with rain and been perishing outside; what a change to spend a few quality hours in the workshop hiding from the world's problems.

Any excuse to do a bit of welding. I'm out of practice.

It's been wonderful playing with my toys.

The completed steady; skateboard wheels used. Long clamping handle and clamp make a decent mounting.

A bit of arc welding using my Pickhill Bantam; Not the best of welds but it's ages since I did any welding.

A neat out of the way clamp.

This should making turning things like goblets easier whilst hollowing; it's a perfect sliding fit between ways ensuring accurate alignment. Just a nice project with something useful at the end costing very little in monetary terms.

It's probably a phase angle controller, similar to PWM but for AC, it changes the RMS voltage by simply turning the power off for some amount of the cycle.

Been on the drill this morning... This would have been much easier with a mill as the holes are different angles to the bent bar.

But I watched some YouTube video last night bloke went small, to massive, no messing around.

316L kills our drill bits...

Dot with a centre drill, then 5mm pilot then 12. One of each drill bit, just a touch up here and there...not fancy bits either... the big hole on the end was an annular cutter, straight through at 22mm.

Measure the thickness of the web of the biggest drill you're going to use and pre-drill that diameter, definitely no need for the 10, 13 & 16.

Don't know why more people don't use centre drills as they are excellent for starting such holes without wandering.

I use spotting drills instead: they work just as well or better than centre drills but are much more robust.

No wonder you are killing drills if you go up in steps like that.
If on a flat surface I usually go through with the drill that is the finished size but that depends on the machine I am using to drill. If a lathe, Mill or pillar drill then in one hit. If a hand drill then as has been said go through with a core size pilot then drill to size.
On rounds etc I will spot drill first then pilot with core sized drill then final drill.
