Stuff you have made today

Not so much made as cobbled together. I'm replacing our 15+ year old heat recovery ventilation system and need to clean out the ducts. It's all 4" and chimney brushes are far too coarse, just needs something to budge spiders and dead skin. Also drain rods are a bit too clumsy for delicate ducts including the flexible bits.

Looking around there wasn't anything easily available that wasn't going to cost 20 quid or more and you knew that it would be a pile of rubbish going straight to land fill.

Then, like most good ideas it came to me while walking the pooch. I have electrical duct rods, and I have polishing mops for the bench grinder. One M5 bolt and two repair washers later and the mark one duct sweeper is ready to go.

You can get various mops from very soft up to stiff close stitched of even scotchbrite so should meet every eventuality.

MIL in Canada had a heat recovery full ventilation system in th bungalow with central vacuum cleaning system that had a couple of wall points in each room for a 15 foot long vacuum cleaner tube.
Every year the cleaning man would come , blank off all vents but one that was the farthest away from the collector or filter tank , remove the collector . Then then using a very hairy sheepskin ball on a long strong light reeled cord would suck the ball along the longest run with his big vacuum cleaner till it entered his cleaner .
Then he switched it off removed the ball and tied on a length of " Gutter Protector. Avoid blockages. Reduce maintenance. (coopersofstortford.co.uk) "
to the cord . pushed the cord and brush in the duct and set the cleaner very tightly to th wall plate using a masking plate & soft tape over the open hole . He'd then nip down the cellar and slowly pulled the three foot of caterpillar back to the collector bin , anything that was loosened got sucked up into his big powerful industrial vacuum .

He also did the vacuum tube central cleaning system for the three bedroomed in a similar manner . The whole bungalow usually took him less than an hour .

Had a session on the lathe making bearing housings for a gearbox, as it was quiet I managed to fabricate the gearbox and install 2:1 gears and installed a 3hp motor to it along with the polishing mop on the gearbox and a spigot on the other end for the flexible shaft and took it to a neighbour and asked if that was powerful enough for him.

Picked up yesterday, an old transport trolley (sorry, don't know the exact word for it in English...) with huge wheels on it.
Will be converted to support a 20L Argon bottle and the Sherman TIG set.

I would say 'Sack barrow" but the diagonal sides on the lifting plate would rather limit the size of sacks.

Edit: Perhaps 'bottle barrow" if it was used to move propane / butane cylinders?

What ever it is called I think you will be able to re-purpose it as intended.

It would normally have a chain or evidence of a chain if it is for cylinders.

I was thinking it might be for a 45 gallon drum. Looking at the handles, they would rest on the floor and the drum would then be horizontal for pouring.

Made the pulley's I was planning on doing last week, nothing like a DRO and a bit of forward planning:



Bandsaw for chopping them off and then set up for boring and reaming to 6mm:



All six done ready to drill and tap for a grub screw, will do it on the mill tomorrow:

Made grabrails for a disability entrance . Arrived to fit yesterday to find out that the ramp was extended by 900mm . Lots of calls arguments and heavy words later they were installed with the agreement of engineer that’s was there fault and we will look at sorting it after Xmas as I can’t get another set made and galvanized in time . Only engineer iv ever come across who doesn’t think extending the length of sloped section by near 50% is an issue for anyone

Actually it is quite well researched and health and safety agrees that it is the best way to stop your hand from slipping off the end.

Continuing with the catapults, not that much progress but should be done before christmas. Got the dowels turned and bored, once the last glue up dries I can start figuring out the ratchet release mechanism and make the throwing arm.

Also did some welding up of these pieces of flat bar I milled, making the first part of my 2x72 grinder build. A 2nd identical part will also be made.

I can feel your frustration - engineers and draughtsmen can often be a pain.

Did you drill the 10mm holes in the return or was that done by the galvanisers? Having learned from experience where galvanisers are concerned, I always made a point of i) drilling holes where they would be out of side and where there was less potential for the item to fill with water and, ii) marking the steel to point out where the holes were already drilled in the hope that one of their staff wouldn't get carried away.

same galvaniser iv used for 10 year so all the holes were drilled by me even in places I didn want to drill because I knew they’d drill(attack wit oxy torch) if I didn . Not the nicest place for the holes but looks better than a gunter hole

Not made, but fitted it today. It's the 8' Edwardian style airer which arrived last week.



I've added some dowels to the laths to stop it doing the usual trick airers do. It'd have killed me, keep seeing everything going skew-whiff. Also used a different cord rather than the sash cord it came with. Horridly stiff stuff that was.
