When St. Valerie left Blue Peter, they found a large stash of her knicker elastic in a cupboard. They sold the lot off as a job lot to my great uncle Jacob Rice Moggy. When it was confirmed that he was dead (a fact he still vigorously denies), I inherited the lot.
Had to buy my own sticky backed plastic, though.

After last week end crucible failure, I was left with a mess.
The base of the fire bit was seized in place with "rubs" of alloy. The catch tray was a mix of ash, alloy and partially brunt wood.
I was worn out from a busy day and was not in the mood to cut, clean and sort.
So, another fire, a few beers.
Cheep sieve. Filled with a mix of crud, slag and dross.
RHS lower edge, you can see a run of melted alloy, from the base of the fire pit.
God clean burn. Very little alloy left.
In total I "salvaged" the thick end of 10Kg of alloy.

Do your burn up with the grate a foot or so above a big steel tub of water .. as it melts and falls though it self cleans to a fair degree .,giving you clean ally globules to re-melt & cast .

I've often done that with the red rubber gloves and put a tie band through the tail I've left on the finger . they last a lot longer than the thin ones you are using .fingerless latex gloves, hoping to start selling them to the masses, who are looking for a new fashion tend to follow.

who am I kidding, its the fingers Im wanting as I cut my little finger tip and its to keep it clean........ using the fingers and gloves gives me 5 covers for my finger, to cut down on the number of gloves used
The proper name for such a covering is a finger stool .. which caused much amusement when I told my trainees the name .

If I am melting to cast. I melt in a crucible, then pour from that.
If I am melting the alloy to separate the alloy from other metals. I melt in the pit, over a tray of water. Then the run off is re-melted and cast.
If, like Saturday, it is a cleaning fire, or a salvage melt. I melt the run and larger lumps in the pit. Collect th run off and weigh them in.
The slag, dross and the other recoverable parts are melted in a sieve or similar.
