Same with boats prop shafts, key is parallel with the taper.Most old vehicles that have a taper fit hubs to half shafts have the key at the same angle as the taper in my experience, the key is square, so not unusual back then.
It can be useful when turning a new half shaft to replace a worn one, as the bottom of the keyway will still be at the original angle, unlike the worn part.
If the key was parallel to the axis it would have to be much deeper (oblong not square) in order to present enough side area all along the taper, which would weaken both hub and shaft.
