Most old vehicles that have a taper fit hubs to half shafts have the key at the same angle as the taper in my experience, the key is square, so not unusual back then.

It can be useful when turning a new half shaft to replace a worn one, as the bottom of the keyway will still be at the original angle, unlike the worn part.

If the key was parallel to the axis it would have to be much deeper (oblong not square) in order to present enough side area all along the taper, which would weaken both hub and shaft.

Same with boats prop shafts, key is parallel with the taper.

Yesterday I tacked up the base plate and supports for the davit with the Mig then headed back to my workshop to Tig it, had to do that I I still hadn't rebuilt the transportable cooler for the Tig and I don't think the torch would have lasted long running dry at 320Amps.

Today it was dry fitted and final welding will be done tomorrow. Also got the bait box welded in place today.

Made this little gadget today, it's for centre drilling marking in awkward places, long shaft drill chuck or angle chuck..

Biro (other makes are available) spring and a 3mm tungsten drill bit.

Also made a hash of taking a pic with one hand whilst trying to hold it straight with the other.

No, but that would be an improvement, but I suspect that would involve extra length. A stronger spring would help accuracy but it's all I had.

The other day I made a post about using Soot Lamps when sharpening a blade.
The images didn't do the theme credit.

Here is another blade, the grinding angle has been dressed back and soot coated.

It is not even, but the point is to highlight what metal is removed.

You can now see the grinding angle is still soot covered.
But the cutting edge is now soot free and shows up clearly.

As per my original post a permanent marker will do the same job.
I think a soot lamp is more traditional. Plus more fun.

I use a soot lamp a lot, they are a great tool for seeing where something is touching or not touching.

I was once in a Gun Smiths shop, watching the craftsmen using them when restoring shot guns.

Soot them fit them, See the high points. dress with a scraper,repeat.

A true skill.

Good morning gents. Been to the dentist today so not too happy at the moment, out on site nothing to do (actually don't feel like doing anything) so decided to post some of the stuff I had been doing lately.
Mussel boat, doing the hydraulics, engine, pumps tank, that sort of thing.

Because of space constraints the engine pumps and tank were put in the void under the wheehouse floor (I do suspect that it WILL be noisy). The engine is an Isuzu 4BG1T which is just over 100hp at 1800rpm. Oh if anyone is wondering they are my safety boots that you can see

The tank is 200liter capacity at the 80% fill level and 'Francis' did the welding for me. The two outlets at the bottom of the tank are for the two Danfoss pumps. The big one is the main pump for the operation of the mussel handling gear 170l/m @ 150bar, the smaller is for the Hiab crane 25l/m @320bar. The 'Arctic Steel' contraption is the 2205 S/S suction strainer for the cooling water for the Isuzu engine. The cooling water (sea water) after it passes through the Isuzu heat exchanger then goes through the oil cooler for the hydraulics, then gets injected into the water mixer for the exhaust and discharged overboard.

The tank is 6mm 5083 and the doubbler plates are also 5083 but 20mm. The main return has a dropper pipe so all return oil gets returned to the bottom of the left hand side of the tank. Oh yes there is a baffle in the middle of the tank.

These go to the main return.

And finally an extra 3" sea suction strainer fitted. This is for the new pump that will be fitted to pump sea water for washing and declumping the mussels. The clients have requested about 300l/m at about 80psi. We will see if we can achieve that, and they want it hydraulically powered.

Last week I got this.



It was complete, it a bit rusty and battered.

So.



Striped down, degreased. The red lenses on this type are glass and held in by 3 metal tabs, So gentle pressure allowed me to remove them.



Painted in Halfords rattle can paints. I took advantaged that they claimed to be able to match the colour. Poppy c******.
This was as close as I could get.



All done and in "Flame"


It is not alone.

I have had the 2 yellow ones for years. I can not remember were "I acquired" them from.

I now had a good reason to restore them.


They are in a poor state, Over 20 years outside.

Both were striped and de-rusted.
Using cheep washing up liquid and Citric acid.

The lenses are plastic and recessed into a frame, that was using 4 tabs to hold them in place into the body.



After De-rusting they were jet washed and baked in the oven to really get the moister out.

Using primmer and filler primer they were painted. I used the yellow filler primer as finding a decent yellow primer in Halfords was a pain.

Again the top coat was as near as possible. I think different councils in the UK had a slight variation in the colour used.



I am not impressed with the masking tape. It allowed the paint to bleed through. So now I have to remove it when it has fully hardened.



I have removed most of the dents and dings. But now all.

A water tank for a mates hideaway in the middle of nowhere, it sits in a stream and fills via a small waterfall. the water is then piped down to another tank on a banking above his hut, this creates the head for a bit of presure at the tap. he has told me he boils the water before using it and after seeing the inside of the tank i would hope so... the bottom of the tank was pretty porous so i welded in a new base using galvy sheet then painted the welds with cold galv, should last another few years, he recons its been up there since his dad had the place which is approx 40 years, so it's lasted well, it's nice to get out into the workshop again, does the mental health a world of good.

Not made today, but collected today by a lovely customer of mine. I’ve made several rigs for her and her hubby, but this is the boldest.

She loves it, and is going to get some full costume shots of the rig being used in anger.
