My experience is they will tbh. The horrible leylandi hedge between me and my neighbour has been hacked back like that a few times. It always grows back with a vengeance.

Yes I could of bought one for around £150.
Why when I can make one.

All to fit these bushes. Any other stuff I guess.
Not sure why I went 20 ton. But you never know.

Butter, today I made butter, just double cream and salt plus elbow grease of course. Just a bowl a fork and half a gallon of double cream.

I have about a gallon left so more tomorrow. You can deep freeze butter with no ill effects.

I made some for the first time a few weeks ago. I saw big tubs of double cream reduced in Tesco and had been wanting an excuse to try. I used a mixer and couldn't believe how easy it was, and almost magic when it suddenly turns into butter! It was delicious too, so I will definitely be doing it again!

When I worked in the dairy I used to be the butter making department "guru". The kit was all plc controlled, hydraulic driven, the churn turned at a fair old speed, used to howl. Underneath that was the separating section where the buttermilk was worked out of the half made butter. Then two working sections, basically two pairs of augers which kneaded it along, before eventually a positive displacement pump pushed it into the butter "van".
The separating section was big enough for a skinny 25 yr old to get inside it to replace the gauzes....

Today I was going to be checking a shaft coupling for runout. Normally I would chuck up a piece that was a bigger OD and turn it down to the shaft size and thus when the coupling was fitted I knew it was running true.
I didn't have anything suitable but did have a piece of the old shaft so I bored out some soft jaws to 70mm.

Then put the bit of shaft in checked it was running true then waited for the skipper to bring the coupling in.

He never arrived, seems the tide didn't go back far enough so he couldn't get the rudder off to allow the shaft to be hauled back enough to get the coupling off. He is going to try again at 4:30 tomorrow morning. I will be out on the bike tomorrow so he will have to wait until Monday

Made a couple of poly v pullies for a mini lathe upgrade.
Turned from some scrap steel bar. I guess most would have used aluminium instead.

The keyway was drilled before boring the spindle hole. A broached keyway might have been preferable, but I think things will be just fine.

Quite often spec a similar keyway on components, as long as they is held either by another component, or a socket set screw in it onto the key.

However, it does appear, "fitting" a key, and drilling & tapping suitable holes for later removal is a forgotten thing.

We have gears on the blowers which are a press fit, then "keyed" by drilling and reaming for a taper pin. The ends of shaft are tapped for a retaining washer then keeps the taper pin from backing out.

I believe this is known as a dutch key.

As opposed to a scotch key which is threaded axially with the shaft.

I'm currently in the middle of a small project (making a Japanese style box) which was intended as a brief interlude from making a garden table. This was a brief interlude from making the box!

A lot of the old Stanley planes have slotted (yuck) screws. I currently tend to get a screwdriver bit holder handle and then rummage around for a bit that's the right size. I've got some bigger Wiha heavy-duty screwdrivers that would do the job too, but I wanted something fairly short and dedicated to dealing with old-fashioned woodworking tools.

Starting with a couple of bits of silver steel, I ground these to shape on the bench grinder, filed a flat on the shank (to help some epoxy bind them into some yet-to-be-made handles) and then hardened to cherry red and tempered to purpley-blue (as per the recommendations for screwdrivers in the little book I use for reference). I then gave them a good clean up with wet and dry paper:

Above the screwdriver blanks you can see two of the screws that they'll be used with.

Spliced a cambium saver in 10mm cord, 150cm long. The climbing rope runs between the rings and this stops it rubbing on the tree, lowers friction particuallly over large limbs. I've been intending to make one for months but I have a large oak tree to climb soon, this should make it much easier.
The small ring is for retrieval, when pulling your rope a small ball is added to the end, which goes though the large ring, catches on the small to pulll it down.

Started on a short 40cm spliced eye 8mm cord.
All still need to be lock stitched.

I spent all afternoon hand making the latch part ( in the white ) that was missing from this Suffolk latch set that was thrown away by Homebase , for no other reason than it just needed doing, I don't even need the latch

I know you want to know that it filed up a peg on the latch and cold riveted through the plate, forming the countersunk rivet head with a ball pein hammer, how many people these days are using a ball pein for its intended purpose ?
