Today I made a clamp so I could change the position of our mains water toby.

Worked a treat.
The existing stopcock box was in the middle of a hedge so I wanted to move it.
Also put in a box for the new fibre connection, which is why the hole is so big.

Now I need to make some press plates out of these...

They're 30mm thick and because they such a large diameter won't fit in my little bandsaw. I have a 9" grinder. Would it be feasible to use that with some cutting discs? If so what type? Will it take forever? Any advice Gratefully received.

Yes a 9" grinder will chop that up easily. Remember to cut 1mm deep slots and just "saw" your way through the entire length of the cut. Don't cut all the way through in one go, it will eat your disks up in no time.

How many discs should I buy? I need to cut two 8"x4" pieces from one of the discs...I mainly use my 9" grinder for building work...just use my little grinder for metal working. So I don't want to buy more than I need as I can't see them getting used. I believe they have a shelf life.

Well you should be able to get through 30mm with a 5 inch/125mm or even a 115mm angle grinder. My seat of the pants estimate would be 3-4 disks per 8" cut, 2-3 disks for the 4". They don't "go off" in my experience, you should always assume it's going to jam/explode in your face so it really shouldn't matter if/when they do. I have tons of very secondhand, slightly rusty cut off disks which were low cost versions when they were made (back in the late '80's). Rarely have any problems with their age but if you have some "out of date" disks you're not happy with, I'll happily dispose of them for you!

I assume metal cutting disks for the 9" grinder would be a LOT more expensive and a bit thicker. Plus a fair bit more grief if it all goes a bit Pete Tong. Don't know how many you'd use but each one will have a fair bit more material before you "bottom out". So

All depends how careful you are letting the tool do the work, not getting the disk to hot, light pressure on a nice straight cut etc. I really wouldn't like to guess how many 9" disks you'd need, too many variables. Maybe someone else here has more experience with them. I only break out the 9 incher when I'm feeling brave/reckless.

It seems that sometimes smaller jobs take longer. There was a short (40-inch) missing section of chair rail in one of the parlors of the old farmhouse we're restoring. The chair rail consists of four separate pieces of moulding. I had a couple of router bits that I used to make two of the pieces, but one of the pieces had a profile that didn't match any of my shaper knives, router bits, or antique moulding planes. So I stopped at a local industrial supply house that has an enormous selection of router bits (an entire aisle), but none of them matched the exact pattern and size, so to make that one piece of moulding, I ended up using a combination of two different router bits, a small shoulder plane, a sanding block, and my radial arm saw (to cut a groove to receive a 1/8" diameter wooden dowel). I probably spent more than four hours to make one 40-inch piece of moulding. It does, however, match the original pattern quite nicely. I haven't installed that fourth piece yet, but I'll post a photo after it's installed and I've touched up the plaster and primer.

Here's the fourth piece, which I made today. You can see the wood dowel glued into the groove.

Just a quick update to my quoted post above. I installed the replacement pieces of chair rail moulding that I made, touched up the plaster, and slapped on the first coat of primer. It seems to match up to the original fairly well. It still needs a bit more sanding and another coat of primer to totally hide the joint between the old and new sections, but so far I'm satisfied with the result.

My coolant pump on my Colchester Chipmaster died a few years ago. It was an old fan motor with "drill powered" pump on the shaft. The swarf did not do the impeller any good, and I haven't used it for years. Around 18 months ago, I bought one of these (although the price has gone up)

A wet day and I finally got around to fitting it. I removed the plate over the sump, cut a hole in it, bolted on the new pump and found a hose and squirty nozzle thing in the back of the shed, adn made a bracket. Not a thing of beauty but it works.
The sump was disgusting after sitting there - entire species of swamp creaters have evolved in it.

Yeah 8 furrow, have a NH 7.270 on the front, we'll weighted up. In light sticky soil the slats don't trail soil as bad as a solid board, in the autumn on stiffer land like the photo the slats generally break it up a bit more so making it easier for the drill. We only have disks on the back furrow, ive never saw a plough with full disks round here.

Made a start on the "running boar target" or Flying Pig as I refer to it, It is going to be a very scaled down version of running boar on the indoor range. The idea is the trolley runs back and forth in the track, suspended and pulled by a single wire kept in tension with a simple weight. We thought springs and counter balances were too complicated following the Keep -It -simple approach:




Had to get creative with the body of the carriage as it is a bit of a squeeze in there.

Chap comes in this morning, can I make a trolley for one of those indoor barbecue thingies?, so a few hours later and had turned out this, just made from mild steel off cuts, he will give it a coat of paint his self, the trays are ally five bar off cuts and just lay in loose.
