Ford Ranger came up with an alarm, just as I was on the way to trade it in.
P1871, mechanical transfer case 4x4 (4x4 module) switch short circuit to battery.
Initial searches suggested a wire wearing against a bracket near the actuator on the transfer case, moisture in connectors or similar. However, YouTube came to the rescue.
I touched the 4x4 selection switch and it fell apart. Took two minutes to put it back together and it works fine and the alarm cleared. Replacement switches are about 104 quid, quality is akin to the contents of a cheap Christmas cracker so I'm pleased about that
