Ford Ranger came up with an alarm, just as I was on the way to trade it in.

P1871, mechanical transfer case 4x4 (4x4 module) switch short circuit to battery.

Initial searches suggested a wire wearing against a bracket near the actuator on the transfer case, moisture in connectors or similar. However, YouTube came to the rescue.

I touched the 4x4 selection switch and it fell apart. Took two minutes to put it back together and it works fine and the alarm cleared. Replacement switches are about 104 quid, quality is akin to the contents of a cheap Christmas cracker so I'm pleased about that

Two new axles made out of 3.5mm silver steel long enough to go right through the wheel and epoxied in. Happy grandchild

Since the 31/12/25 this bit of kit has seen a lot of use. Neighbours cars needed starting, my company car had tyre issues.
Being a modern car, it does not have a spare wheel, just a pump and tyre weld. The supplied one broke.

But, so did this one.

The above repair led n to a repair of a recently donated item.
I used this fix to make a new folder for the Restoration side of a local MIS.

Ok, we cut this short bit off.

But.

It blew the end off.

In the past some one had used glue to fix a leak, so we had to drill it out. With some drills that came with the donation.

So, at the same time I extended the pipe.

A friend dropped by, with wine, needing to borrow a axe.

By chance, a donated axe was to hand. My friend thought it would take a while to restore.

The edge was good, but the burrs needed addressing.

One axe saved, a bottle of wine left.

My friend with the wine, asked if all the items will be restored. I explained some are to far gone. But will be used as training items or for spares.

To explain I used these as an example.

No before images, but this putty knife is covered in car underseal.

These two items are just for the fun, as the tools were out and a new toy was used.

Do not loose the ball bearing.

classic example. this car has been left disassembled and the plugs out for god knows how long.

the compression test results when i first tried to start it and heard how fast it was spinning.


same on both rotors.

a bit of wd40 in the plug holes and spun it over for a few mins on the starter




try that with a piston engine. 0 compression to enough to run with no parts required.

cleaned the chambers with brake clean, cleaned the plugs, deflooded it and....

clearing up...

and its first hot start after clearing all the codes.

idles still too high probably a vacuum leak. will deal with that later. best news ever though, after repairing the wiring loom...



although this one does come back.

oh and the deflood process was ably assisted with the gooloo. i dont think it would have started without the extra cranking speed the gooloo gave me.

Say what you like but most piston engines can be started for a few seconds then switched off then restart without having to deflood

so can a rotary, if mapped correctly. the deflood was to clear all the crap out of the chambers. would have behaved the same if i filled a piston engine with wd40.

they are mapped stupid rich from cold from factory to make the cat light off faster. it is impossible to flood my racecar. or any of my previous rx8's. all leaned out 20-30% from cold.

Lower control arm to replace on my wife's Fiat 500 today. Easy wee job I assumed on such a basic car. Oh no!
Some idiot when designing these made a box section bolted between the front subframe and the crash beam, conveniently obscuring the front bolt that holds the control arm. You have to take the bloody bumper off to unbolt the crash beam to remove said box section to get at the bolt.
All sorted but what a PITA.
