Stuff you have fixed today

I crawled under the Surf last night and replaced the iffy front rollbar drop links, it took about 45 minutes. I put these on about two years ago.
The rubber had perished on the two cushions six months after I fitted them though. It got picked up on the MOT last week so I thought I'd sort them out.
Roughtrax kindly sent some more FOC in the post and they've just sat there for 18 months

Have a GSXR 125 in foe none starter.

50 psi compression, leakdown test showed air letting past exhaust valves. Valve clearances in spec.

Me and the workshop manager pulled the valves out this afternoon and they look rust on the seats?, water damaged.

Really odd fault for a bike in daily use?.

Seeing your young lady their getting her hands dirty and keen to learn gives me hope that not all is lost in the mad world we currently live in.

We're all quick to knock the younger generation and state that none of them want to do a days graft or get dirty, but your daughter is proof that there's plenty out there that are willing to learn and get involved if someone is willing to teach them. It's the teaching bit that is often missing unfortunately.

She has been a massive help at home while we have been working on the cars and she's asked for a while if she could come into work with me.

As you say you should have all the time in the world to teach your children, I see people just chucking money at their kids with no real quality time together and it never ends well..

I have treated my son and daughter exactly the same, they both have got stuck in because they enjoy it and we have fun fixing things.

I do wonder if I have lead them down the wrong path as fixing vehicles can be a thankless task at times but my son is still enjoying working and is 2nd year apprentice now.

I didn't have the best childhood so made sure my two feel they can join in and the their dad will always have time for them.

Fixed a turd of a Sealey battery charger belonging to my daughter earlier - not been working for a while - the cheapo Sealey lot can't even buy a transformer with a tin clamp to bolt it down. Okay, it must have taken a fall at some point, but a decent transformer and it would have survived..

I put some hooks up for Mrs Robo to store some of her horse rugs.

Trying them for size, I swear her horse has a rug for every day of the week plus indoor, outdoor, summer and winter

after lunch...

and final level.

helped greatly by the tip taking the view that its garden waste so no limits on how much i can bring (6 trips with both car and trailer full...) and me pressganging a much fitter than me friend to come give me a hand...

after the tip closed at 4 i also took a full trailer and car to dads yard to finish filling the hole in.

so thats 7 full loads in one day. not bad going. about a load a hour.

Startrite Bandit for a local charity.

The motor shaft (which is custom and not at all replaceable) had both worn and snapped due to a bearing failure.

Welded up the shaft, turned it true again, built it up with bronze, machined the features back to original spec, pressed the rotor back on, and reassembled.

I didn't get to test it, but I reckon there's a non-zero chance the windings are toast, and it will land back with me to modify it to fit a conventional flange-mount motor.

All 3 were de-rusted with a cup wire brush on a grinder.


The tips were dressed and brought back to shape.

Heated to a red heat and dipped into iced salty water. Cleaned up and tempered to a dark blue.

Bit of paint.

This dirty, dusty Pifco lantern was complete. I hoped it just needed a clean.

The bulbs were tested by removing them and putting them across a good battery.

The top bulb is a flashing type, so a good battery is needed.

Being cleaned up, yes I caught the flash as well.

All done.
