I've a spray version from Custom Paints.
It is supposed to be overcoated with one pack lacquer then two pack so it's a pretty involved process.
Brush painting would be a lot easier.

I’ve no idea with Scania but some are.

Doesn’t mean much other than they’re hollow so not as strong as you think when re purposed into a punch.

Mine is only a 1.9 diesel but the rest looks pretty good so far.

The subframe is too big to fit in my blast cabinet and the weather's rubbish so I'm doing ST3 prep.
If I keep this, it could be a good test bed on coatings.
Blasting is so much easier on something like a subframe with all the nooks and crannies so it's a really good test for hand prep.

I'm using all the hand tools I have grinders, wire wheels / brushes, die grinders, roloc discs, needle gun and my home made bristle blaster.
All be the other bits and bobs are soaking in citric acid at the moment so will see how that goes as well.

I had a look at the timing belt and noticed the water pump was leaking so I'll change all the belts and tensioners while I'm at it.
Only other issue I've found is the fog lights have lost the silvering.
I got a good second hand set but I think I'll try resilvering the old set for the craic.
I've some very expensive chrome paint I want to try out.

I paid a local blaster 50 quid to blast mine - simply wasn't worth the hassle of trying to do poorer job myself.

I would normally just blast it and was going to take it to get it done but thought I'd see how hand prep will last.

Its in its second of epoxy primer (Jotamastic 90 tinted drab green) I should get it top coated tonight along with some other bits.

I'm in the middle of sanding the front slam panel, it's a pig with all the corners and holes.
Same as the subframe, no primer just a thin coat of black straight onto the galv.
Sweep blast would be the answer but again too big to go in the cabinet.

I had to do some careful scraping to be able to get the suspension pivot blocks (already fitted with replacement bushes) back in place - they were a tight fit.

Afraid my slam panel only got touch ups. Cheap HID conversion into the back of the dip beams helped a lot to see where I'm going. If you are going to change bulbs, do it now - I've never needed such nimble fingers, needle nose pliers, bits of wire etc to get the clips back on the main beam bulbs!

I don't think so - they feel just like hefty lumps of solid metal anyhow. Also they are out of a fixed-speed (1500rpm) 450-ish Hp Generator engine (probably a DC Series) - where fancy valves wouldn't offer any benefit I'm guessing ? I never heard of gassed valves, let alone why!

Also, I've just yesterday heated the tips cherry-red, then quenched in engine oil in an attempt to harden the punch tips - and the valves didn't explode

Don't know about gas filled, but sodium was used for cooling.

The sodium was in a hollow valve stem. This melted at high temperatures and helped transferred heat from the valve head to the valve guide.
Was only used in exhaust valves, I think.

I seem to remember the old valves needed special care with disposal. There are better materials and ways of doing it nowadays so it's very unlikely you will come across them.

A light in the bathroom has been blinking for about ten years, finally got around to sorting it, took ten minutes.




The keen eyed might notice I cocked the ceiling up pulling the old spots down, is there a trick to getting them out?

I should have done this a couple of months ago, so I guess it is a fix. I need to let water out the stone gutters on the porch now its been built. It needs this lead "top hat" fitting in a hole to guide the water into the drain pipes on both sides.

First drill a hole. Measure 15 times, cut once, I want this bang in the centre of the gutter and I don't want much break out.

Looks good, bang on and very little break out.

Top hat fitted, I did the other side of the porch, now where did I put the drain pipe brackets?

I'm not sure if I will line the gutters with lead yet, possibly if they look like being a frost risk around the joints.

Got the subframe and other bits into top coat last night.



SWMBO is away so I took the opportunity to speed up the drying process.



Weather's carp tomorrow and its jacked up outside so I need to get it mobile asap.

Shagged water pumps take out the timing belt on those 1.9 diesels! (Assuming it's the CDTI Vauxhall also use) Vauxhall recommend 80k replacement but I did mine at 44k as they snap very regularly well before 80k!
I'd check the swirl flaps are still attached and the EGR valve too...

I was thinking of a day or two in the workshop just clearing up and moving the bikes to where I can actually reach them to work on them, but now I'm out with covid I want to go to work

If you're going to do the belt etc another £50 on a pump is a no brainer!

I would double check your engine doesn’t have a wet belt which needs to be changed !

Wet belt? I've never heard of a belt drive inside the motor, covered in oil etc.
