I am when it comes to vacuums, our vax is sh**e!

Clean/change the filter in the top and bottom.

And/or unbung the blocked passage to one side of the brush bit.

Mine was a free replacement for an earlier version that had some design faults - bits just kept breaking. They sent replacement bits and then a complete new vacuum. I'd buy another.

All the above gets done regularly. It just chucks bits about with the bristles... Much prefer my Henry but he's too good in the workshop to clean carpets with!

Mine did for a while - turned out the exes kid had used it pick up the masking tape he'd pulled off something, rather than put it in the bin. Properly bunged up the tubes to the cyclone bits. A later reduction in suckage turned out to pet hair/women hair/sand/sticky sweet mix jammed in one of the passages in the brush head bit.

A subsequent reduction in women and kids living here cured both issues

Still running a Dyson DC01, works great but bits are starting to fall off! also got a Henry but its no good for hair really

Definitely! Although very prone to toppling due to being top heavy and small front wheels it can survive most knocks. Dropped mine down 4 steps this morning while trying to over reach with the hose barely a scratch

Replaced the chain on my mate's 2.1 Sprinter. Chain's at the back, so engine and box out, then split them. 14h start to finish, we were done at 1am.

Presumably the engine is installed complete on the factory line. Maybe there should be a right to “easily” repair rule? Like they are doing for appliances. Give the designers a bit of a challenge but thats their job

It's actually not that bad, and works well in integrating the engine into a number of different platforms. From cars to 4x4s to vans, both longitudinal and transverse. It's quite modular, with different front covers for different belt/accessory setups.

The rear gear/chain drive isn't as intimidating as it looks. It has 2 balance shafts, vacuum pump, injector pump, 2 idler gears and the chain up to the cams.

14h straight start to finish, as it needed to be back on the road ASAP.

Same engine in my Sprinter.

Yes it goes in as a complete unit. Not dissimilar to how i remove/refit it.

Easy is a relative term, and there's a point at which the unwashed masses shouldn't be able to work on their vehicles.

Another thing to bear in mind is that manufacturers need to make engines that are efficient, quiet, light, reliable, low-emissions, powerful, smooth, etc. They need to satisfy everyone and complex engines are the end product. (It also has sequential turbos!)

So they're complex out of neccessity. Honestly, it wasn't a bad job at all and it's not a bad engine to work on.

Walking the dogs earlier in the year and saw this mixer had been put outside a house with a load of other scrap. It looked too good to scrap so I popped back with the van and took it home.
put it together and it was seized-

Drum looked ok, hardly used-

I took the belt off and the drum spun round so motor is siezed then , stripped it down-

motor bearings were siezed, they were held on the shaft nicely, I ‘spose it saves manufacturing the shaft properly

cleaned it all up, painted the motor, covers etc and all back together. I had some yellow Rustoleum paint at work which was almost a exact match!!

I know its a diy only mixer, but its perfect for me to do small jobs around the house, etc. It all comes apart and stores in the drum so doesnt take up any room either.
Well pleased with it.

Great resto save. Very satisfying when you end up with a freebie that you only have occasional use for.

Got fed up with drawers for different grades of sandpaper constantly dropping, so knocked up some runner extensions in Fusion360 and then laser cut and glued and pinned into position. Simple little job, should have done it years ago.

Needed a service anyway, and I wanted to get to the bottom of the oil leak from the top end. It went in to an 'independent specialist' 12 months ago to have a pile of other issues fixed, they claimed to have replaced the cam cover gasket but it didn't seem to improve much.

This is what greeted me when I pulled the coils out:

All four spark plug wells full up with oil. Not surprised it was running a bit rough

Pulled the cover off, and somebody's been telling porkies. Rubber gasket was as hard and brittle as bakelite, probably the original.

New gasket, rebuilt the vacuum pump with new seals as that's another known failure point, and all seems leak-free so far. But that's another garage that won't be getting any repeat business from me

About 35 years ago I bought a compressor. Last week the regulator gave up.
Was in the same store to buy a new reg and customer before me was complaining about something that broke. They gave him a replacement without argue. When it was my turn I said I also got something that broke. She had a good laugh hearing how old it was

A little digging in my good to have pile and some reused now in working condition again.

Second repair to this scag mower. Rocker bracket is bolted with a locating pin cast in place.

I didn't fancy trying to grind a round 'stump' the first time, so I built up with weld then drilled & reamed for a 4mm dowel pin.

It happened again in the other cylinder today, so customer brought it straight over.
For some reason I couldn't drill and ream a hole as good this side. But it was a tap fit, though looser than I would like, but a good helping of 638 will keep it in place.

I had a drilling jig that I made last time but I think I've opened it up already. Need a hardened jig.

Another day another welding/machining job.

I haven't got any photos of the shaft before yet, they're on my GoPro, but here is the shaft repaired.

Bearing seat (20mm) had a 2mm groove worn into it.

Terribly undersized spigots for this shaft, but anyway, sprayed the bearing seat, remachined, tidied the centre up on the other end.

Overall it's within 2thou TIR anywhere you put the clock on the bench centres.

Best I could do. The spigots are so small and flimsy there's just no good way of supporting the part.

They wanted the bearings pressed on so I've just done that, delivery to the customer tonight.

i purchased a 5.5kva generator at a farm auction a few (8 or so?) months ago. today i decided to have a fiddle with it and find out what's what with it.

engine starts fine, but it doesn't generate any power, so off comes its end cover...

moving the avr out of the way and taking the brush holder and brushes out of the way allowed me to put a meter across the commutator. I found this showed open circuit, so it has a broken winding. off comes the end housing.

to find the windings broken to both sides of the commutator. i tried to solder a extension to the wires but even after scraping them clean it wouldnt solder so crimps it will have to be.

Central heating now working, not used the central heating function on our combi boiler since last winter, with the recent downturn in temperature the CH refused to work

Time clock was suspect as I couldn't change any of it's settings

New time clock off eBay and it's all good



The boiler is an Ariston Genus, just turned 22yrs old and now working again, not the 1st time its broken down although all it's had in that time is a couple of diverter valves and a pressure sensor thingy, might live a bit longer yet

To hold the telehandler door/window open,used these sprung catches before,spacer is 40/40/4 box.
