You can fake/mimic the cast iron look these days quite well with curvy plasma cut stuff.

Have a look at this for the concept:

An honourable mention should go to the FireBall Tool bandsaw for good use of this technique.

If you are really keen, you can put body filler into the joins and shape to create a fillet just like a proper casting before you paint it.

Consider this: what is the stock in trade of a blacksmith? Castings or forgings? If a smith needed a stand for his vise, it would likely be forged/drawn out/upset/punched and riveted rather than cast.

Not so much fixed, but taken apart to modify. I’m going to put a rectus fitting on the back of my Lorch HandyTig. The amount I take the gas hose on and off, it has basically made the fitting go loose. Time to sort it and make it quicker once and for all.

How many different ones are there Brad? I’d like to stick one on the back of my Lorch MIG the same as on the ESAB 200i Caddy so I can easily swap the bottle from one machine to the other.
I’ve always held off doing it as I’m not sure exactly which one I need.

You want a rectus 21ka. I’m still undecided whether I want to put a male fitting or a female coupling on the back. In the past I’ve bought genuine Parker Rectus ‘Made in Germany’ fittings. From Tidyco.

I fixed a heater and a winch today. Heater had popped the thermal.fuse. a bit of copper soldered in place just like new.

Cheers Brad, I think I’ll see if I can find an inline male fitting that I can fit in the gas pipe rather than on the actual machine. Then I needn’t modify the Lorch casing, and if I leave a couple of feet of pipe attached to the machine it can hang off the bottle chain so I won’t have to reach down too far to plug in the gas.

I did a compression check today on the MkIV Golf I overhauled and refitted the cylinder head to. The coil packs had failed melting the Catalytic convertor and the compressions were all over the place so I suspected badly burnt valves. The seats were ok and the valves not bad so I had the valves refaced and they lapped in nicely. Compressions are 255 / 255 / 252.5 / 257.5 so I'm happy with that.

Should be driving it soon, really clean low mileage car repaired and on the road under £150 and I have another for spares, both freebies

Are they anything like water hosepipe or pneumatic disconnects? On these, the male is open when disconnected, but the female closes on disconnect. If you put on an open one, it means you have to remember to switch off at the bottle before disconnecting (and then re-purge the whole line).

Once again, nothing ground braking, but I've had my tig for over 7? years and the on / off switch has always been broken, not an issue, but half the time when I plug it in it trips out the breaker, which is in the neighbours workshop.

So finally got round to buying one, and its nearly fixed.

Yep, true, I don't know if you can make out where some lout took a black marker pen and added some notes to remind them of what did what, been bugging me for years, spot of acetone and well it's not clean but cleaner.

My Sharan - Since buying it in September I've been chasing an issue where the turbo oscillates in and out on acceleration - I've been through everything and was about to toss a match at it but today I found the little culprit, the clutch position switch was broken so its been driving round thinking the clutch pedal is on the floor all the time.

What's it doing in there? I assume that means you're dependent on them for your supply actually reaching your sockets? Just don't fall out with them.........
