Structural welds in my house opinions please.

^^^^^ shouldhave you rund when i welded a mower deak the metal was so thin as soon as i put the welder to it it melted ended up like pigen poop after i had to fill the holes

You could use your £99 lidl plasma to cut out those welds & start again.

Wouldn't be too happy with those notches at the bottom of the joist either.

My thoughts too! Was this the original plan from the structural engineer or has someone been freelancing? They will weaken the beam seriously

Notching out of the bearing end of a length of timber has little effect on the 'strength', that's why you're allowed to notch upto a third of the depth. It's when you notch out mid span that you compromise the strength. I've seen 4" joists with 2" notched out for bath waste pipes!
Looks like much less than a third has been notched out so apart from it looking a bit rough it really is nothing to worry about.

If it's only a rafter then maybe, however they are often marginally sized at best, if you have lots of stuff, water tanks etc up there I'd be inclined to ask the engineer instead of hoping for the best. It's relatively easy to sort out before it's finished, the same time as they are re welding the other horrible bodge.

The engineer's had a look yesterday and seemed happy enough with the set up except the crap welding. As for freelancing, the chippy spoke to the engineer and did a couple of drawings and was told to carry on, it turns out the engineer didn't understand what he was being told until I talked to him yesterday. When he and a colleague of his turned up I couldn't understand him either! He's bloody Romanian

Update time!
I had @Brad93 come over today to sort out the welding on the steels, he did an excellent job of it too! Knows his technical stuff a lot of which went over my head. That little Lorch has some power!
One side was even worse than I thought with little penetration into the metal! But its all sorted now.
A big thanks to Brad nice to meet you as well.

Did really have time to take pictures but what we done was put proper welds in between the existing ones on the front.
On the back, poor welds that were accessible I ground out with the Metabo flat head grinder and a 3mm grinding disc. Some of the welds were acceptable so on the first beam I redone 6 welds on the back, and a similar amount on the shorter beam next door.

All welded with 3.2mm Filarc 56S out of a fresh vac pac and the Lorch MicorStick on a 25m extension lead.

That second photo of the new weld reminds me of my last trip to France. The wake from behind the flat out Brittany Ferry-SMOOTH and CONTINUOUS.

Bit spattery on the back of the beam, not great access (I really need to get a mirror on a stick!) but they went in nice and hot.

Filarc 56S is a 7016 so not quite as fluid as a 7018 and a bit more susceptible to poor rod angle. But they do penetrate a bit deeper than a 7018 which is what it needed.

I had some 4.0mm 7018 with me but I didn’t want to put more weld on the plate. Could end up bowing the beam with too much weld.
