builders don't normally like to pay full stop

Nope.
Builders like to get quotes accepted so quote cheap then Cut corners to make a profit.

Been stuck working for a few like that. Told the last one to do one and went it alone. Nothing more demoralising than having to do a half arsed job.

Coming from a company on Jersey renovating farm buildings etc to a very high standard with no cost spared to the uk building market was a massive shock to the system.

I've done 3 full back of house removals and put a 305/305/93 column across the back,
6-7 meters long takes some jiggling with needles to get in place , notch the ceiling joists into the web , for a clean ceiling line
The only place I use this design is on a single story above bifold but as brad93 quotes, the base plate is stitched alternately sides plus I add gusset to the outer face,
That Carry's a few outer courses of brick

Building inspector may ask for the welders certificate , have they got one ? Should have it !
As I understand it 1090 doesn't come into it as the welding is done on site not in a factory ! Having said that the steels should have a C E number and certificate conforming to 1090 , is any of this work on a drawing from architect , structural calcs should be listed as well ! If your not happy with what you see tell the builder !

The builders had a couple of welders round yesterday to weld a plate to an i beam supporting the back of my house. ( its actually a chalet bungalow) The joists for the roof are being held up with it. It's 6 or 8mm plate welded to the bottom of the large i beam spanning the back of the house, all of the roof sits on this plate.
I need some opinions on the welds please.

Not being funny or attempting to blow my own trumpet in any way, but I could have done better, especially if I were doing it to my own house and the likelihood of the roof falling on my own head.
Having said that, it's amazing how much a shoddy weld will hold up, not that that's any great comfort, I know.

@Tigman we have engineers calcs, drawings etc, the design was changed by the builder to push the steel up flush but he said he'd spoken to the engineer and all was ok. I'll ring the engineer today.....

I was on the client side in the industry and verbal was always confirmed in writing.

Nothing wrong with doing that if it's done right. Very common practice.

In 20 years of building and dozens of jobs involving welded beams I've never had a building inspector ask for a welding certificate!

If you use a joist hanger to fasten the joist to the timber in-between the website then a plate isn't even necessary.

Welded plates like yours usually support masonry so, like someone previously said, even though they look rough they're not holding much, so not much to worry about. Neither is the size of the notch! As a rule of thumb you can notch 1/3 of the depth eg take 2" of a 6" joist.

Thanks guys! The engineer came over today and said the design side of it is sound just the welds are crap. He said the bearing of the joists on the plate was ok just add some noggings after the welding is done to stop any movement/twisting of the ends.
@gaz1 does that welded on plate hold the outer brick skin up?

When the plasterboard is touching the steel Ive seen cracking in the plaster when the timber drys and moves but the steel doesn't

cured by using a stop bead

I would have said that 5 year ago , Harrow Council asked for welding Certs , and I was pullled up in Borehamwood , and rightly so ! I do more drilling than welding these days !

I paid £60 when they were on offer and a member here gave me a code for £10 discount.. and i have to say it is a cracking light weight inverter welder that a child has indeed used and made some nice welds lol
