Structural welds in my house opinions please.

The "welder" even said its hard welding through the paint!
The welding set they had was about the size of a portable generator no more than 2' long by 18" wide, looks to me like it didn't have the guts to get enough heat into the job! Plus lack of any actual skill!

Why didnt they just do this and save the cost of a welder, or even use a joist hanger from the top of the beam.

Nothing wrong with doing that if it's done right. Very common practice.

If you do too many welds it will bow

That's what I was thinking. Pretty standard to see it done like this. Though I normally bond noggin in the web and skew nail into the joists.

Counter batten the ceiling and the steel is invisible.

I don't think it would work as my roof has a double pitch a bit like this but not as exaggerated.

There's 3 or 4 rafters and joists together so no space to cut them like that picture.

Thanks for the replies, so its not just me that thinks its a **** job then?
I'm not happy at all, I could do better and have. What me off is that the builders have been pretty good till now.
Rather than put the beam under the joists and have it boxed in they put it flush with the ceiling tryng to make a neater finish to the job.

I’d stitch that 100mm every 300-400mm. Alternate it on either side.

10mm steel. 25mm batten. Non issue for the most.

The standard detail Id use would be a timber runner bolted through the web of the steel and packed out with ply so that the runner had full bearing onto the bottom flange of the steel and the face sat flush or slightly proud of the toe or the beam. Then you just need a face fix hoist hanger nailed to the runner for your joists/rafters to land onto.

Not much point in that bottom plate unless it was an existing joist/rafter that was located too far away from a new steel so the support needed extending out.

I’m not being funny but builders don’t want to pay proper welders rates.

Hence you get carp.

We charge £45 an hour for basic welding work onsite plus travel plus materials.

Give me a pm and I can probably sort for you tomorrow if required.

builders don't normally like to pay full stop

One issue with jobs like this is. Put 10 builders there looking at the job and you would get 10 different ideas of the best way to do the job!

But most important of all the client and building inspector need to agree there happy with it.

Welds are a bit cap but if it's just the ceiling then it's nothing

No expert but if that was mine I would liked to have seen the whole joist supported and not notched, to get around the steel I would have double tacked, first layer going up to the beam and the second bridging it. If that makes sense.

The timber in the web isn't carrying anything.
