I have an old 4 season packs up small feels like nothing in it, but warm if, you take your clothes off so you dont sweat and it can breathe. Also makes a huge difference putting the bit around your head. Or wear a wolly hat.
My other half who always complains of the cold borrowed it last time out and couldnt get her head around it being warmer with less clothes on.
The liner works well too, also makes it a bit less harsh to get into.

We use 4 season bags and have an old Witney wool blanket to chuck on top when it gets cold. Get a bivvy bag to put your sleeping bag in to give more insulation, the trapped air (plus anything else you get in there, beans anybody) helps keep you warm.
