I have an old 4 season packs up small feels like nothing in it, but warm if, you take your clothes off so you dont sweat and it can breathe. Also makes a huge difference putting the bit around your head. Or wear a wolly hat.

My other half who always complains of the cold borrowed it last time out and couldnt get her head around it being warmer with less clothes on.

The liner works well too, also makes it a bit less harsh to get into.

Having met John there isn't going to be many of the "storm" bags that he will fit in to stay warm! I've had a couple of different ones, I'm 5ft odd and I didn't have a lot of length to spare in the bag.
I have images of the poor bloke hopping around Hunton in the middle of the night like he's in a potato sack race.
I think ex military would be the way to go as soldiers are usually a bit bigger than hikers and the bags cater for this....
It's that or try the bags for fit and that makes you feel a bit of pleb in the camping shops haha

When I'm sleeping in the awning I put a picnic rug (PVC backed) on top of the air bed, then sleeping bag and duvet on top. toasty.

For £100 you could get two nights in a Premier Inn We use 4 season bags and have an old Witney wool blanket to chuck on top when it gets cold. Get a bivvy bag to put your sleeping bag in to give more insulation, the trapped air (plus anything else you get in there, beans anybody) helps keep you warm.

Might be an option John, I haven't bought one yet, but it is my planned next purchase. Can't remember the make of my current bag, I'll check when I get home but it's plenty warm when camping.
The jura 2 is available in a longer version (xl) if space is a bit of an issue with you being a taller gent. Good sleeping mt to insulate under you as well might be a good idea.

Or see if you can find someone making Aussie swags, made from canvas and have a high density foam mattress, pillow, duvets and all rolls up. So on a nice night you can sleep outside or in crappy weather just roll it out in the car.

That is a crazy price, just one I found online. Wouldn't imagine it would cost that much to get a standard swag made. I've had mine since I was a teenager. Slept in it at -10c no bother.

Go to the chain stores that sell such things they are very much reduced this time of year (many at cost or less). I have a fishing one but I can sleep almost any place, slept out in the truck for Sept 1st opening day on the wildfowling this week gone, didn't even get inside just put the seat back n pulled it over me.

the fifth season is in a British 7 day week, that equates to all four seasons in one week then the fifth season for the rest of the weekend coz they aint got a name for that...

I just use a 3 season lightweight bag with a duvet flung over the top as well as jogging bottoms and a sweat short.

Not sure if you can stretch you budget a bit but a Trakker 365 is the bag I use when out carp fishing, slept under a brolley in frost no issues. It's a big bag too so not restrictive like survival/adventure mummy type and is a full 5 season bag with a removeable liner so it becomes a 3 season. If you look at the fishing tackle sites you find a big selection. I would say if you get cold in a 365 then the best thing to do is pack up and go home

I use mountain equipment personally 4 season or my 2 season and a old army liner over the top but in the Landy generally ill use a duvet

when spectating on rallies and sleeping in the car I just put my storm suit on its easy coz the legs unzip to the hip, and if needed to get out to 'go' its still on you, I just take some crocs to slip on my feet. but the best I saw were the old tank winter suits you could put them on in a sitting position iirc
