I slept in my car at a steam rally this week end
I have an estate car with an air bed nice and comfy
Problem was a I was very cold just using a 3 season bag (ebay cheapy)
I have been looking at the 5 season bags used by night fishing people
Any advice would be great
I have up to £100 to keep me warm

Personally I would take a 15 tog quilt and your 3 season bag....

Can't help with the sleeping bag, I knew once I was going to do an overnight in the car in January I took a duvet...brilliant, nice and warm and plenty big enough to wrap around.

I've always had best results with a quilt, can't get away with them sleeping bags.

Got one of these in the van. Working away in mid winter and woke up toasty every morning. Granted the van is insulated but the back and side doors weren't.

Saw you on Sunday, would have come to say hello but you were talking to someone and we had a bored 3 year old

British army 4 season are good. The Artic version better with lots of room

My lad in his younger days bought an ex army sleeping bag, Slept a lot outside in the winter in just the bag(no tent) said it was fine,

3 season should be ok this time of year, especially in a car.

I have a 3 season vango thats 25 years old and its too warm most of the time.

5 season Gelert I've had for years, it folds over for survival mode (the 5th season) but is super warm and comfy without that

I took my 3 season ex-mil bag this weekend, usually sleep under it upto late sept, clear skies forced me to get in it, and I was still cold. Had to throw my gortex jacket on top

you might consider a fleece sleeping bag liner, they add a lot to the comfort, they are easy to wash when needed and can be used in summer on their own. Mine is a 1980 ish ME Shearwater but they don't make them anymore, but a quick google turned up some options. They are also immediate warm to get into when the bag is cold.

I keep these in the car in winter and they double up as an emergency sleeping bag.

I have a vango latitude 300 sleeping bag, never been cold, only about £40

Been out camping in October and been warm.

+1 for military arctic sleeping bag.
Slept in the van/shogun plenty of times throughout the year using one. I am a warm sleeper, tho - exmrsegg needed a quilt as well.

Course, you could always go "full gyppo" and install a woodstove?

Camping gear is rated from "lowland summer"(+20deg) to "mountain/arctic winter" (-40deg)
3 season is UK spring - autumn lowland
4 season is year round lowland
5 season is year round mountain

It's a bit generic tho - there's no real standard.
I'm happy in a three season bag year round in the dales. Camped on Nevis in January when I was younger in a five season, and had to leave it unzipped.

The enclosure youre sleeping in also makes a big difference.
A car/van tends to be colder than a tent.
My phoenix phreak mountain tent is ridiculously warm compared to my old canvas vango force ten.
And that is much warmer than the bigger family dome tent which we use for summer holidays.

I did a fair bit of looking at sleeping bags recently.

For warmth to weight (or size) performance, you can't beat down. In the end I bought a higher end model from a middle of the road company (vango) for ~£100. 3season (just) and less than 1kg.

Weight/pack size shouldn't be an issue for you though, so do as has been mentioned and keep chucking layers in the car until you're comfortable; duvets, fleece blankets, rugs. A sleeping bag, and especially a cheap one will loose performance over time.

One thing I used to do when car sleeping was take an old sheet as big as the cabin of the car (not that easy on an estate!) And shut it inside the doors. Helps cut a tiny bit of conductivity from the glass, stops people peeping in and lets you crack a window or two without letting all the insect life inside.
