Years ago a mate bought a Citroën CX (remember them) that had been repossessed because the owner didn't keep up the HP payments.
The discs / pads were so worn that the pads ground through one of the front disc and separated it from the bell. Never saw a mess like it and didn't think it was possible.
Can you imagine the racket driving that?

Above the clatter of a cold CX engine? no chance!

Not seen those for years! I've a feeling they are used on some of the older PSA and Ford stuff - I remember going out to a 'breakdown' where the blokes brakes were metal-to-metal on his front discs and he was moaning that it 'just happened, no warning', I said to him that someone had cut the squealers off the brake pads, his response was along the lines of 'oh yer, that was me - didn't want them damaging the brake discs.....'

Last car I saw them on was a 2006-8 Mazda 6 MPS.

Yep, hence not working consistently enough to be of any use.

Although at least better than the aforementioned Mondeo mk2 where someone previously had cheaped out, fitted pads without wear sensors and just twisted the wires together. Good job I didn't rely on those!

I do feel that people more & more expect cars to look after themselves, or at least do the daily/weekly/monthly checks for them, the technology can have it's foibles but oil level sensors, TPMS, brake wear sensors etc. have left the 'convenience feature' nice-to-have, and are now considered essential equipment (Yes, I know TPMS is mandated by EU & UK law). We get a lot of 'there is a light on' type jobs where the driver genuinely appears to not know that the 'fat @rse' symbol on the dash means put air in your tyres/check for a puncture and the brake pad warning light or message means they should be booking in for new brakes, not a diag slot to investigate a warning light on the dash - although it does help with my upsell rate

Probably better rather than newer...

Although some makes fit pad wear "squealers", small tabs of metal that are meant to contact the disc when the pads are worn low and make a horrible squeal. Not in my experience that they work consistently however so I wouldn't want to rely on them.

Nissan navara's still have them.

Handy nonetheless, especially when you employ guys that drive fully laden Transit`s as if they are sports cars and cant get six weeks out of a set of brake pads
