It would be great to see that if you manage to dig it out! Maybe one reason for the lighter weight is they don't have to have as thick of a wall on the steel castings vs the iron castings. I have heard cast steel is not ''desirable'' from a manufacturing stand point and doesn't cast as nicely in general as you say. I think a lot of steel castings were replaced with ductile iron when that came about, including vices. It would be good to hear what manufacturing engineers have to say about this.I "think" I have a Samsonia 39 somewhere in my pile of stuff that might come in handy at work. Usually a bit lighter than the Cast-Iron versions with the Parkinson name on (presumably because steel doesn't cast as nicely and doesn't like big changes in section), Samsonia were Parkinsons range of steel vices
Thank you and same here!Hello, and Welcome to the Forum.
Good to see another local Member on here.
You being a long time Member here, I would be confident that you have your priorities right; so who did you leave behind ?Spent a great day out yesterday at a local steam fair, 'erindoors loves a traction engine. Amongst the stalls selling toot and rusty gold I discovered an early Record 75 without the swivel for £35 and, temptingly, a leg vice with a table and stand. Sadly that was in the auction which stated too late in the day for us and I'd have to leave at least one family member behind to get it in the car.
You gotta spread the love, I left both the vices, though I would have loved the leg vice stand. The great thing about such fairs, besides being a great day out, is that you can buy things at a decent price as people know the worth of things; £35 for that Record 75, compared to £100+ on eBay.You being a long time Member here, I would be confident that you have your priorities right; so who did you leave behind ?
The ruler was made for Riyadh.
I've got one of those tiny anvil vices, and have actually seen some offered for an outrageous amount of money
Would be much more fitting if the imperial was on top…..
Bung some powder in with some water (preferably warm, although it won't stay that way without an aquarium heater or similar) and chuck the part in. Be patient and when it's done, give it a light rub down with wire wool or something like that, rinse, dry and oil it quickly.Anyone got any advice on using citric acid to remove rust. I've looked ir up on the net. but found no definitive answer. I know some of you use ot, I'd like to know ratio of crystals to water, time, and do you add baking/washing soda to the solution?
