If we only could see into the future ? Who knew how much some things would appreciate in assumed value. If I knew then what my small vice would be worth now, I would have bought a hundred of them back in 1975 when I bought this Wilton; which if I recall correctly, was $29.oo dollars.

A funny little aluminium thing I rescued that was lying in the mud at a mate's yard, quite handy to have out in the garden if I want to hacksaw something or whatever ( provided the cat agrees to move out of the way.. )

Scored 2 Record No. 634 last week. Paid 150$ Canadian for both, which is basically a steal when you think a used and abused record No.3 sells for 100$ these days.

Here's a little piece of history about them.
Those come from the Jeffrey asbestos mine that was in the city of... Asbestos in Quebec, Canada. The mine ceased its operations in 2012 and at the closure, the remaining employees were allowed to take pretty much everything they wanted (and were able to move out of the mine's facilities). The guy that sold them to me told me he took about 30 of those vises, (some larger, some smaller) and he gave them to friends and family and sold the rest on FB Marketplace.

One is in pretty good shape and the other has a bent handle, missing jaw and missing pipe jaws. I'm planning to restore both with the whole stripping-bondo-paint job that they deserve and I will machine the missing jaws out of 4140 that I have. I might try to heat treat them to try to match the original quality of the tool. They weigh a bout 160 lbs a piece and my workbench is nowhere near large or heavy enough to use them at their full potential. I think I will try to make a base out of concrete that I will pour in a 45 gallon drum. this way I will have a solid and heavy base that I can move if I really need to.

Bought this very rusty vice a few years ago with the intention of "restoring" it, it was taking me a bit too long so gave it a strip clean and reasemble instead so at least I've got a useable vice. had to make 2 new screws, drilled one out and lost one. Despite the rust it is in very good, little used condition.

Nice acquisition ! Its a newer model. The older model had a round end on the screw for the tommy bar.

Pardon me, but I can't seem to understand what difference it makes if the vise / vice is Imperial or Metric ? All a vice does is clamp an object within its jaws.
Please educate me as to what the important difference is ? Thanks.

Maybe it's the jaw size that makes 'em imperial or metric, say imperial would have 4inch jaws and a metric one would have 100mm..........

Square nose, cheaper clamp handle, cheaper body design, cheaper spindle retainer went to a split pin/washer, when u see them side by side there's no comparison in my opinion, when they changed the shape they cheapened it imo

I must be getting old. Didn't think about it in that way. Yeah, quality issues, like with most modern offerings.

BTW made between 1972 and 1981 being a record ridgeway company
