Went back to the same savage yard last week and the Parker was still there. Now very rusty and crusty, obviously been outside in all weathers for the past 18 months. Gave it a poke, seized and in need of some TLC. I thought if I can get it for a good price I'll take it home, clean it up. bolt it to a bench. Good price I thought sub £35, so I asked. It seems my estimate was somewhat short, about £150 short to be exact. Apparently, the owner had seen a mint one on line for £600, no idea where, needless to say it's still there and likely to be there for the foreseeable future.

Let it rot just where it is.

I picked this Record 21 up and noticed the quick release is different than other 20 series vices - it has a piece of steel rather than a cast piece.

Also no made in england stamp on the dynamic jaw.

Just wondering if anyone knows what's going on with it.

I've only ever seen steel strips.

As far as I've surmised, the steel slip as a retainer, rather than the cast retainer, was an earlier model thing.

Here see the piece I refer to. It is attached to the casting with two screws.

Which is normal.
Wheras the 21 has a single piece.

identification please, picked this up for a few dollars looks well made possibly english, i thought it was a leader
steel plate welded vice
what i believe says rw jouls stamped into front jaw (unfortunate weld splatter part covers the name) though this could be from the person who owned it
had remnants of a sticker on the front so green paint is original
and an emblem stamped into the rear jaw appears to be an "S" in a diamond with letters s,b,s around it

This mark may be the "diamond mark" r which was a lozenge-shaped Design Registration Mark used in Britain between 1842 and 1883 showing that the design was registered, giving some protection against copying.

late WWII, as part of their war effort the weigh machine co Geo Herbert of London patented the idea of a vice made just from weld fab of steel sections (patent 561649, applied 1942, granted 1944) and then made one very like this - 6in jaw, 11in opening, 90lbs -- not common, usually painted white - they also made an all-weld-fab version of the Swinden rotator (only slightly less scarce) usually painted green or blue, - both well made and sometimes have brass plate with "The Herbert Armourer, patented" -- I'm guessing mostly sold direct to Commonwealth Army and Navy. I think they went out of the vice business by 1950 and maybe sold the patent to Record (used in Leader brand). I have one - I'll look later, from memory not quite the same as yours

ps - checked my Hebert - def not the same - yours looks better finished, mine 'rougher/tougher/bigger" - what size/weight yours?

thanks for input Danny, 100mm jaws, 8.2kg, metric threads, im thinking 1980, 1990s, not sure why though, completely different build when compared to a leader

While clearing the shed ready for replacement I came across a couple of ammo boxes which haven't been opened since I cleared my dads shed in the 80's, after needing a hammer and chisel to get the catches open I found these in one of them.

One new Record No.0 vice still in it's original wrapping and a used one!
