I realise this post is almost 2 years old now but did you ever establish whether the A.M. was Airministry ?Just aquired a No 84 Steel vice and noticed its got AM cast in the body and the slider. Anybody got any ideas of its meaning? - I'm guessing Air Ministry but don't know

Strip it down and use sand paper internally and externally to relieve some of the friction, which is most likely due to rust, and a wire wheel on a hand drill is helpful too. I had the same issue with my Swinden's when I got it. An overhaul isn't hard to do and is well worth the effort.Swindons help
I bought an old Swindon's a few months ago, it works fine apart from the Clamp nut that allows it to rotate, even when the nuts loose its very stiff to rotate, so stiff I had to put a fox wedge in the gap so I could rotate it, so any top tips?
Still cant decide if its a keeper or not so was going to bolt it to the bench and see how we get on. On the other hand I could flog it and get my self a nice Fortis and some odds and ends with the money leftover???
Bit of a dilema
