It will get dusty with grinding dust. Thats what vices are for.But it will gather dust, leading you to suffer.
Give it to me and you will not suffer.
But you will have to clean that dust. More work, less output. It will get dusty with grinding dust. Thats what vices are for.![]()
To be honest I am Fortis / Record man but as I had heard so much about them I bought a Swindons when one came up at what I thought was a good price.Sell it to me and you'll have no dilemma!![]()
Speaking of " spring loaded ", awhile back I acquired a spring loaded adjustable height steel work bench. A good platform for the Swinden's vice. The table swivels 360*, and is good for welding smaller stuff.ref Winchman and arctourist fine Swindens - here's my 'The Herbert - Amourers Vice' patented because fabricated from welded plate/tube (19 pieces, a bit heavy with the weld, but should be even stronger than the Swindens) 4in straight jaws, 2.5in curved, 44lbs) only made by Geo Herbert (big London weigh machine company ) as part of their WWII effort, 1940/50s - one size of this and a straight vice which later became the Record Leader Steel.
I mounted it on a spring/gas loaded cylinder lift, which gives a very secure height and swivel adjust (found in junkshop, think it's an older version of one still sold by Leinen for a reasonable price for different weights of vice -recommended - (mine pot luck £25 - didn't know it would work until got it home)

even better - good vice stands/platforms/tables are not easy to find - this looks the bestSpeaking of " spring loaded ", awhile back I acquired a spring loaded adjustable height steel work bench. A good platform for the Swinden's vice, the table's top swivels 360*, and is good for welding smaller stuff.

Haven't seen anything that's different or at a reasonable price, can't sell any eitherseems to have gone rather quiet around here recently -- I hope you're all well -- since mattf started this thread it has been the main forum for UK vice info ---- have you emigrated to faceb or garagej or ?
anyway -- post with my info/speculation on early English vices coming soon
Haven't seen anything that's different or at a reasonable price,
We all know about your vices.I'm simply all viced out, now. It'd have to be something truly special to consider a new addition.
thats a nice one, fine quality i hearTo be honest I am Fortis / Record man but as I had heard so much about them I bought a Swindons when one came up at what I thought was a good price.
I do have a Polish vice I still cant make my mind up about but a Polish Chap told be its a good one made by BENN Bielsko, until recently it was on a bench in Winchboys Garden with a plastic tub over it!
It's now inside. The front jaw is fixed rear one moves which I thought was point less but it doesn't intrude in to the are you are standing it, its more balanced so for now its another keeper.
I also have a York and a few Little imps.
I do have a vice problem!

A good start for the Young man.The other day when visiting my Son's house I saw he had just been erecting a second hand 6x6 wooden shed I said why do you need that he said it was for his 12 years old son who has an interest in mechanical things, I said now that's great..so yesterday I asked him what his son wants for his birthday present he said something mechanical.I had a thought !! As I was shopping, and I was by B/Q I went in and asked do you have a bench vice yes sir was the answer £45 ah OK I will check with my son which I did, yes dad would be great was the answer .. However, by now I was outside Tool station, so I went in there and spoke to the guy on the counter he said we have one on offer £29 I looked at it, and it was the same as the one in B/Q who wanted £45.
Have a look at the "details" of the image. The size will be shown in KB or MB.site has issues with posting photos, says photos are too big, well its a thumbnail?
Went back to the same savage yard last week and the Parker was still there. Now very rusty and crusty, obviously been outside in all weathers for the past 18 months. Gave it a poke, seized and in need of some TLC. I thought if I can get it for a good price I'll take it home, clean it up. bolt it to a bench. Good price I thought sub £35, so I asked. It seems my estimate was somewhat short, about £150 short to be exact. Apparently, the owner had seen a mint one on line for £600, no idea where, needless to say it's still there and likely to be there for the foreseeable future.Found a new reclamation yard today, found some rusty bits and pieces which, one day, will become something though don't know what at present. Anyway, found two rusting vices whilst rummaging among the rusty gold. One is a parkinson Perfect 8A the other had no markings apart from what you can see.
