I think so but i'm not sure, I asked the girl in my office but i think she was a bit confused by all the stuff arriving for me . Everything is now on its way to me so i will let you know.

You don't strictly NEED it in the way you need it on the sides but it does reduce cutting loads and make the chip flow away more freely.

The problem with applying top rake to a threading tool is the more rake you grind on the top the further the cutting angle departs from what it was when flat-topped. It also lowers the height of all the cutting edges rear of the tip (which is why it modifies the thread angle). If you were clever you could choose the top-rake you're going to use and then work out the tool angle you need to grind to give you you're required thread form BUT it would be different for different work diameters, smaller ones being more affected than larger.

Another thing you could do is grind your tool flat-topped and then use a small grinder to add top rake by hollowing the top face leaving the cutting edges un-touched. That would be some fancy work though.

Having said all of this, for a fastener it probably doesn't matter worth a damn, and if you ever looked at a hand-ground tool under a reticle you'll find that a tool that looks perfect in a fishtail gauge can actually be quite a few degrees out. If you're making an instrument or other fine work it'd be a consideration.

There should not be any top rake. As Pete has said , it reduces the point angle and therefore gives you a malformed thread.

Had a go at grinding another tool. Should have gone for the 8mm tool steel rather than the 12mm.

Tools, 12 or 8 not much difference when using them, half of mine are 1/4" as I was given the tool steel ages ago.

Do you have an angle grinder with a cutting disk? if so use that to get the basic shapes (cut off steel and not grind it away to get the basic shape) before finishing them off on the grinder. I'd have a bit more side rake on the top.

I used 5º for the side and back rake. Will try using the cutting disc next time.
