Before the Cleveland unitary authority was formed, the mayor of Stockton used to swan round in an old Daimler DS420, the sort of thing that looked like it should be a mayoral motor. Its reg. plate was SDC 1M (presumably, Stockton District Council 1 Mayor).
Under Cleveland, the plate was put on the then-latest thing, a Simon Snorkel fire platform; just what they thought they needed to fight chemical fires. Over the years it was swapped to successively smaller fire appliances (I don't think we have a platform any more, although we do have a Toyota or something 'small fires unit' that mostly seems to park outside the local chippie at teatime) until, finally, the unitary authority was disbanded and Stockton got its mayor back. And a new car to wear SDC 1M... a Skoda Superb.
