Is there any chance it had head gasket issues when it was laid up?
I had a K series that seized solid so that I couldn't turn it over with a breaker bar
When I stripped it down I found the anti freeze and oil had mixed and solidifed around all the bearings and everywhere else the damn stuff flows. Fortunately it all cleaned off with wd40 and a cloth but altogether it was enough to seize the engine totally solid

Might be worth taking the starter off and making a tool that bolts into place using an old starter pinion that engages the ring gear but be aware that the torque converter flex plate can break . I reckon a Lexus V8 would fit a treat, just saying !

I do have a 1UZ engine and box as it happens, will easily fit in the engine bay, but the exhausts interfere with the steering box, so its a non starter.
I also have a BMW M57 diesel engine, but again, the exhaust and turbocharger want to be where the steering box is.

Thanks for the offers of engines chaps, but I have several Rover V8s in bits, and lots of parts for them, which is a result of the Land Rover sickness.
I am thinking of alternative engines, but this is very much frowned upon in Rover circles.

Time for a rack and pinion conversion? Matcless on here has converted a classic Jaguar besides P5b steering boxes always leaked
I have five currently. One works. The others are all in a state of disassembly or sat waiting to be fixed! Its a sickness as you say.

I only have one now, but it hasn't turned a wheel in ten years. It is my 23rd I have owned, and for the most part, when I needed one, they would be in bits for one reason or another. So its time for it to go I think, along with all the axles, wheels, gearboxes, body parts and whatever that are cluttering my life.

Strangely mine doesn't leak, or didn't when the car was last used.
I do like the idea of a R & P conversion, but getting the geometry right is a nightmare, and I am a bit too dim for that.
Then there is finding a suitable rack ............
If you really want to upset the purist crowd, its possible to find a nice 5 cylinder Merc OM605 complete with the ecu, scram module, throttle etc out of a Sprinter 312 , sadly they are throttle by wire, but its possible to swap them for a all mechanical pump and turn the bust up to quite impressive power levels without modification to the base motor itself. Its common to swap the OM series into landrovers, and the 605 is a bit shorter physically than a 606 so its easier to insert into tighter engine bays, although doesn't buy as much bragging points down the pub.
I've got one tucked away in the corner of the workshop I crank over periodically because its a great donor and I couldn't bear to let it go when my sprinter finally went the great scrapyard in the sky due to the main chassis sections being like lace, but I HAVE to keep my LR's with something that looks like the original engine or would be fitted by Landrover themselves under warantee (200tdi in place of 19J etc). So irony is I'm having to hunt down a useable 4.6 P38 motor which are rare as hens teeth in France as most of the P38's were diesel here.
I just have 3 landrovers so just a mild dose. One is completely stripped currently a bare chassis on a rotisserie getting accident damage repaired (101, no replacement new chassis available), my 90 has just been re-chassied with a shielder chassis (which I wouldn't recommend as a supplier, but you live and learn...) and is being refreshed with a 200tdi in place of a 19J, and a disassembled 7 seater 110 just appeared in the small ad's missing its engine and box but at the right price and as I had a spare transmission and 200tdi and fancied a 7 seater, it'd be rude not to right?
These are fine, I'll do them and they go together like airfix mostly, its the VW T2B camper that's waiting to go on the rotisserie next that's giving me some worry, as it needs quite a lot of the chassis replacing and its a unibody, but I'm not starting that until my cnc plasma table project is done after finding all the chassis sections as cad drawings on thesamba.com...
