Sorry to ask but the search facility here is poor, so is there any information or knowledge available in this forum for a power steering rack conversion that eliminates the steering box of the rover

Strangely mine doesn't leak, or didn't when the car was last used.

I do like the idea of a R & P conversion, but getting the geometry right is a nightmare, and I am a bit too dim for that.

Then there is finding a suitable rack ............

What flavour of M54? the early smaller ones were OK, = 2.2 & 2.5 the higher output ones like in SHMBO Z4 are a PITA and have lots of "quirks"
They are oil finicky and burn it like and areo engine even if you keep the CVS system clean. around a 1ltr per 2000.
Oh and they really need oil change every 5-7000 not the 15000 that BMW say.
They overheat in traffic (very coolant fussy), and love to throw the engine management light on if you look at them the wrong way.
They get cam chain wear as bad as M47's if you dare give them the wrong oil.
£2000 cast stainless exhaust manifolds that crack on the Z4, (Think this may be Z4 specific) and are hell to change .
Plastic inlet manifold that develops cracks, (because of running warm) causing misfire and rough running, and you will struggle to get one second hand as they are a known weak point.
Oh and the valve covers are plastic and weep oil onto the exhaust manifold, but you can get after market seal kits, BMW want you to buy a new rocker cover!!
Apart from that, they are fine!!!
if it is a 3L there are many forums dedicated to all the lovely fun that awaits the unsuspecting owner.

I was thinking of the 3 litre one for a transplant, so thanks for that, I will look elsewhere. BMW engines not as good as people make out then !

I have got an E39 M57 engine here with very low mileage, but the turbo needs to be somewhere else. I know these can be a bit problematic too, if the M47 in the Freelander 1 is anything to go by. I like the idea of more MPG too

OM605. Manual pump if you want to go mad and tune it and eliminate all the electronics (its throttle by wire with a SCRAM module and ecu/sensors/pilot injector in the donor vehicle). Not as big as the OM606 (because its got one less cylinder ofc) but its shorter to fit in tighter engine bays and not as heavy. Rotten sprinter mk1 will give up its innards at a reasonable price usually. I'd use the box too on a 2wd vehicle.
I have a rotten 312D sitting in the yard waiting for me to have time to extract useful innards before going the great crusher in the sky. It could push the sprinter to 110+ mph in stock trim, its a shame because the chassis is basically lace where the important bits like front suspension subframe bolt on, but the rest of it is great. Classic merc van...

I have got one of those too, and the gearbox and everything else with it. Had it ten years, but unfortunately the exhaust manifolds want to be where the steering box is. Changing the steering for something else is a modification too far. Maybe.
They are good because they produce a fair bit of power, but not too much torque, which can break the differential and axle shafts.

Other problem with the diesels, is getting a final drive with a high enough ratio.

have heard of the OM606, but not the OM605. Will have a look at that !

We have the same problems with Sprinters here. Good to drive, but rust badly in many different and sometimes strange areas ! One we had at work (2005) had a completely rotten, and I mean rotten windscreen pillar !

I must correct myself, the sprinter had a OM602, not a 605. The difference is the 602 is 120hp sohc and still capable of mechanical pump and 350hp, the 605 is a 150hp dohc fitted to different vehicles.

In stock trim, both engines have masses of torque, great fuel economy, will do a million miles if looked after. Dieselpump uk sells all mechanical pumps that eliminate all the electronics, and runs a OM605 with one of his pumps and forged rods putting 430hp out in a landrover that purists detest. As he says in the vid, he used a 605 instead of a 606 because its just easier to jam into smaller engine bays. You can get a idea for packaging when he shows round the engine bay if that's helpful.

But if you are just pottering around to the shops or where ever then it's all good. Also would be a step up in performance and refinement.

Car not been out of the garage for about 15 years, so not high usage.

Why on earth would anyone fit an electric motor in a classic car. Just no. No soul, no character. Might as well just buy a Prius.

I'm working towards fitting a 605 into a reliant scimitar this year.
I have a 6spd manual transmission from a c200cdi to go with it and a new dual mass flywheel.
I'll be running the electronic pump because it's cheap and makes smoke free power up to 250hp.
I already learned how to "immo off " the ECUs and socket/ chip/ remap them so that theyre easy to run standalone.
You just need crank sensor, manifold air pressure sensor and the throttle potentiometer.
I'll start a project thread at some point.

Top tip is the normally aspirated 605 and 606 engines can be had cheap ISH and easily fitted with a turbo. Rods aren't as strong but still good for 50hp per cylinder!

Each to their own but there are always those who stand against advancement of technology and they are always on the wrong side of history. (Luddites for example).

There are some cars (especially classics) in which the engine made the car. And I agree in those any engine swap should be avoided even electric.

Not getting into pros and cons of Ev ownership but what’s not to love about more fun, instant torque, being able to charge for free at home (if you have a solar system) and the peace and smoothness of an electric motor.

In my opinion explosions do not equal soul.

I know it’s a very nuanced debate but I think it’s important to try and embrace new tech.

I have a triumph dolomite that I love. But it’s the 1500hl. The 1500 was never a good engine, and mated to an ancient 4speed it can’t keep up with modern traffic. Nvh wasn’t a thing when they were designing these cars. So I will be swapping in an electric motor.

If it were a sprint I wouldn’t do it.

Not to hijack smallfry's thread, as I think he'll be interested too & given the spare om602 I have available, I for one would be interested in the mods you did to the ecu to use the stock pump and disable the SCRAM module because running the 602 standalone without a expensive manual pump conversion opens up a lot more possibilities. I'm pretty sure the ecu's of the period will be similar in some aspects, although mine has the merc only round obd2 socket (I have the adaptor) and I believe has to go on STAR for diagnostics with good coverage.
