Rover engine seized !

Just to revisit this, I got the engine out, and finally got it in pieces. Only one cylinder seized, but didnt look rusty ? Had to knock the piston and rod out from the bottom with a block of wood.

But anyway, just out of interest, here are a couple of photos of the sludge in the sump and on top of the oil pickup strainer 30mm thick in the sump and 12mm on the strainer.

Looks like someone may have 'saved some money' by not changing the oil and filter. I stripped a low mileage Vitesse motor a few years ago that looked just like that inside. Needless to say the crank journals were quite badly scored.

Crank is fine, the last time the car was used on the road was 1980. I bought it 16 years ago and started it to run it into the garage. It has not run since.

I have not changed the oil, and I doubt if it has been done since 1980, as it has always been indoors. Before that, it has got dealer service history with eight stamps.
