Restoring my 97 Mitsubishi FTO - Beginner so any help and feedback welcomed

I now have rear arches WOO!!!


They still need some filler and to be made pretty but I wanted to get epoxy primer onto them asap to prevent rust setting in or moisture getting into the seams.


I'm thinking the process now is filler, the. Another coat of epoxy primer (filler is porus) the filler primer and then paint

Good news cam carriers are striped and cleaned ready for re assembly.

Down side has anyone got somewhere I can stay for a few days while the misses cools down.

Forgot to include I've stripped painted and welded in a oil return bung. I'll need to go back later and add a bung for an oil temp sensor later.

So here's the modified sump and all ancillaries



I've also got my silicon couplers finally for my new air filter.

Time to rebuild, fir new profile cams, seals and tappets.

Fresh wrap of titanium heat wrap for the manifolds and turbo pipework.


I've so welded in a bung for a temp sensor into the sump so this will give me a more accurate reading.

Tidied up and coated in epoxy mastic my inner sill/drivers floor section.



Engine build wise sumps on and time to test tolerances and it's bang on!!


With that done the heads can finally go together.


If I do say so myself this is really looking well, it's gonna be a shame to put it into a track car hahaha...

But of course it can't all be smooth sailing. The bung I added for a oil temp sensor of course was placed exactly where the turbo pipework runs FML

That's a future Dan problem for now so blanked it off and am taking the temp from the sandwich plate.
I think I'll come back to it with a new bung once I'm doing the first oil change.

Time to get the intake manifold and fuel rail together.
There was a damaged thread so that had to be helicoiled


Then the injectors and fuel rail were next to go in.


Time to install it.


The engine looks well I must admit.


Going for a slightly OEM+ look of rather cleaning everything or black to keep it low key and easier to clean.

I'm installing a new LSD into the box to keep up with the power.the new engine build will make over standard and give the box an overhaul.

First off its time to strip and clean.

Break down the crowngear to see how it mates with the diff.

Been away from the forum for a while now, so I have just caught up on the build. Great job and looking forward to the next update

Rear arches are done, inside and out, new tabs for the bumper mounting tabs and fresh pockets for the rear quarter panels.

A lick of rest converter for the moment as it's too cold to spray and when I get a chance I'll pull that back and give it a cost of epoxy primer.

But for now IF YOU SQUINT ITS MINT!

Today was one of those long tedious jobs that takes ages to do and nobody not even you will appreciate.



Nearly 6 hours of stripping back the main engine loom back to the core wire loom.
Any signs of damage were taped up or soldered and shrink wrapped.



Once done all of the original conduit was binned and replaced with fresh conduit and rewrapped with automotive loom tape.



The pictures don't do it justice but it still it's something so small. But with the new super clean engine going in a scraggy, dirty and damaged look would really detract from the build.

Managed to get it inside for December and January but back out now for a few more weeks while I panic try get some finishing touches done before the engine and gearbox are ready to go in in 2-3 weeks and baby #2 lands on the 1st March.

Thankfully I just need to run some lines for oil pressure/oil temp gauges and a slightly bigger job of running an AN8 oil line through the bulkhead for my oil accumulator.

I'm trying to avoid the turbo pipework which you can see here

And as you can see everything installed space is limited.


I'm hoping get a space in or around the throttle body. My problems is there's so little space on the opposite side due to the heating system.
