you have forgotten the bit where you cover the plaster with insulating tape, or 2" masking tape if a larger wound!

No I have covered that before. I do not subscribe to the view that allowing a wound to fester is somehow an indication of manliness.

Yes, the macho nonsense we all grew up with. A child or young adult has much better defence against infection (even COVID related), the older you get, the lower your defence. My own preference would be to give it the best chance possible for a speedy recovery. It's not just the possibility of infection but more about having a painful, difficult to manage injury while you're trying to get on with things.

We've all done it of course, find a "clean" rag in a filthy workshop, wrap it in gaffa tape dah de dah. Worse than that, take an industrial superglue (just like 'Nam) and fix the gaping wound with biologically hazardous chemicals, trapping whatever bacteria may be in the glue, let alone deep in your wound.

I would have done that years ago but like I say, my old decrepit body is noticeably slower at dealing with infection. Now I am older and wiser, I keep a first aid kit in my workshop and appreciate that PoundLand superglue is a biologically hazardous industrial product, nothing like the sterile medical version.

Not advocating ******* on open wounds, but bacteria isn't a negative thing, less than 1% of bacteria make you sick.
