Reading up on the DS and found this, a vw/porsche engine and gearbox may be worth looking at and it would all be going in the right direction. Shoving bigger engines on small transaxles never works, gear/diff ratios never suit/compliment the torque characteristics of the bigger unit.

Honda V6 engine in the old Rover 825 Sterling ? Powerful and very reliable, which Rover V8s are not.

Hello, thanks for all the input.
Unfortunately you can't flip the diff because it is a hypoid type. The axis are non intersecting and non parallel. The diff is also integral with the gearbox. There is no separate bell housing, the two halves are line bored for the output shafts.
The DS has inboard disc brakes mounted to the gearbox to allow for centre point steering.
The drive shafts have double Hooke joints and the front wheel bearings are nearly 200mm in diameter.
The CX engine is basically a DS engine with the head fitted back to front.
Despite the enormous bonnet, the last quarter of the engine is in the passenger compartment.
Below is under the bonnet of my DS. Wings are removed (three bolts, rear wings one bolt, doors, one nut)
I'm readying myself for my next potential project, an SM.
With a DS engine, if you hear a rattle, you turn up the radio, With an SM Maserati engine, the rattling is the sound of £50 notes being torn up. DS engines will fit an SM. In France some years back, someone converted the SM to a turbo diesel with nearly twice the bhp.

A supercharger can be fitted to the DS, well, it's been tried. The problem is all the pulleys you see at the front are driven by the camshaft, not the crank. You can't get to the crank because the clutch is in the way.

If the thing is that complicated, and impossible to supercharge, why not a turbo? Anything with a belt under there would not be my choice - most belts specify 5 yrs between changes?
