Having had a look at the chassis with a view to a quick wire brush and repaint, it became clear that it had been "repaired" previously. It should be a nice corner with re-inforcement top and bottom which connects with the C section neatly. You can see that the whole lot is a pig's ear. Further investigation showed the "repair C section" had been welded on top of the original frilly metal which is why it was not possible to get alignment. On top of that it had been cut short. Then everything had been filled with some sort of builder's mastic which made a perfect well for moisture to sit in and provide lots more frilly steel!
Today has been spent cutting away all of the old repair to give me a good piece of chassis to weld back to. I am thinking of building the complete corner as a unit and then just welding each end, rather than do it in pieces. It has been a bit frustrating because I couldn't get in there easily, but with a Sabre saw, Dremel and 3" air cut off tool it was eventually done. Of course I don't have a useable vice now either!
