The batteries are Nickel-Cadmium, made by the French company SAFT. They have a wet electrolyte - a 30% solution of potassium hydroxide - and need to be topped-up with distilled water every 3 months or so. They are about the physical size of a 50Ah car battery, with 5 x 1.2v cells making 6 volts at 100 Ah in each of the 27 batteries, for a nominal 162 volts.
The 28kW DC brushed electric motor is made by Leroy Somer and it has a separately-excited ( SepEx ) field, which allows for regen braking.
