Renovating/servicing a Rapidor hacksaw

Most 1/2HP single phase motors are 71 frame size which need just over 200mm height with the connection box on top and the B3 mounting holes (front/back) are at 90mm centres.

so I could rotate the body through 90 degrees so the connection box is at the side unless this can be done with the foot mounting,.

Just checked, you can take the feet off and mount them either side so the height would be 160mm which would fit, just need a plate with slots in it to adapt the 90mm centres on the motor feet to the 75mm rails. I only look at this is the budget versions don't suit.

Just had a look, it is a bit big - 250mm high and I've got about 180mm to play with. Thanks for spotting it though I need a motor for a Electra Beckum spindle moulder, I don't think this will fit but its heading in the right direction.

Choose your washing machine carefully! The old twin-tubs have induction motors which should be OK, automatics usually have universal motors with a commutator, these run at over 15,000 rpm uinder no load.

Yeah now you mention it, it was one out of a twin tub!

What do you do with 'em?

Grind them up for blasting media, the interesting ones I pass on to a friend who makes lanterns and mugs out of them.

Actually twin-tubs have a reciprocating motion so you might be able to convert the whole machine to a power hacksaw

Would a tumble drier motor be sufficient? They crop up from time to time on Freecycle.

small fractional hp motors couldnt pull the skin of a rice pudding .look at the size of the drum to size of motor pulley geared down to about 50- rpm from about 1450

Taking into account what BS says I would still keep it. I use one on my glass crusher with a 40:1 reduction gearbox and another as a vibrator on my screening machine.

The good thing about them is that they're easily reversible, just use a single pole changeover switch.

ok for running a small pump or fan. u can get them out of old warmair gas heater units that have been scrapped .1/4 hp are about the min for making anything decent . u could used to pick em up for a fiver but there fetching 15 to 20 quid now

Happy days, my dad obviously doesnt know his watts, the 1/4hp motor he gave me works out to be 1/2 HP and it looks like it will be almost a direct swap. Shaft diameter looks about the same, the shaft is much shorter but I've managed all these years so I think it will work

Looking at a drier motor it's rated at 1.3A, I reckon this would be 1/3 HP near as matters.

Whilst they are geared down to drive the drum they have to shift a bit of weight and there is the blower to drive as well.

Well in that case I may well keep it. I'm not short on 'useful' things that I've had stashed for years, but one more bit won't hurt I suppose!

They are a bit big, I'm guessing this motor has high starting torque. I will be moving the foot around to the side as currently the motor is 20mm too high with this on top.

I took the guard off to have a closer look, seems its a 2 speed. You can see the chipped (not as in ECU ) pulley, anybody welded one of these up before, it does seem to be shredding the drive belt a bit.

Has this bit of casting been snapped off in the past before it was painted blue? You can see the rough end in the centre, there are 3 photos of the same component I wonder if anybody can provide a photo of this to allay my fears?

I think I have located what used to be part of that casting if it is snapped, if you look at the top of the picture just left of the power socket on the wall there is a handle, probably for engaging/disengaging the clutch? Can anyone confirm and does anyone have better pics?

BTW - this picture came from e-bay, it sold for £207!

Its confirmed, there is a handle missing, the casting is snapped. I'll see how I can fix this once I get it apart, I'm guessing the lever is cast iron not cast steel. Lots of good pictures of a similar Rapidor here

I hoisted it up into the workshop last night and its sitting on a trestle so I can work on it easier. I'll strip it down at the weekend and start painting it Adcock and Shipley grey, it will match my Bridgeport if I ever get one ;-)

Here's the hole in the workshop floor that I hoisted the hacksaw through, I also dragged up a Fordson Dexta chassis minus engine a while ago- we had to wiggle it a bit to get it through, the hacksaw is on a workmate and the Dexta is nestling behind. Crap photo!

Here's the chipped pulley

Here's the pulley being repaired, the 3 pulleys are in one lump and a bit of a sod to put on a lathe so I'll probably finish it by hand. I used MIG and MS wire and its seemed to take to the cast iron OK. I built it up in layers and ground it back a couple of times but still some small pin holes. I also slipped and cut a groove with the angle grinder so aesthetically not pleasing so I will get the MIG to it one more time.

Heres' the cracked frame

Here's the repaired frame, needs taking down with a flap disc, just ground the top down to see if there are any voids.

Here's the saw being stripped with caustic soad gel.

Away on business for a week now but hope to get the things completely stripped next week and start putting it back together.

coming along nicely just fill the pulley with plastic metal its only cosmetic look at the older lathes some of the castings looked like swiss cheese and they filled them suposed good old engineering
