I'm constantly amazed at the advances in technology in my lifetime. Gone from no telephones [landline, never heed mobiles] in most homes, if you needed to phone it was 4 pence at the red box , no TV, no computers, etc etc., to what we have at our command now.

I'm not a complete Luddite, but some of what's available is.....well.....just 'cos we can'. There's no putting the Genie back in the bottle though.

Yes its a nice quality bit of kit, opto isolated inputs etc, used to use them for starting remote generators etc.. there are a number of conditioned inputs that can be used to trigger alerts So for example when A happens then B happens so make C happen after a time delay then and send a text to say its happened etc.. but you can figure all that from the documents of course.

Ordered up all the new bits (I think) so will continue with the thread to see how it goes as it seems like there are a few folk interested in these as well. I've ordered a new PSU (nice use of an acronym by a bodger) from China as recommended by hotponyshoes as I plan to mount the controller out of the box. Would there be any issue having 240v at the controller terminals outside the box or am I best using 12v for safety reasons?

12 volt will be safer if the terminals cant be covered and that doesn't mean insulation tape

If it's touchable, you want low voltage whenever possible.

Got it working with a 20a contactor. Will put the GSM in the box and have a new 12v PSU coming. Mock up, and now.I know it works will fit it out in the box.

No I screwed some in. Pretty sure you could get a box with some already in.

Even with the modern world we live and working in IT I still think this kind of thing is cool. We have an SMS controlled unit for the FBH(fuel burning heater) on our Discovery 3. Send a text and it starts, lets you know it's started and you can even get status updates with the temperature etc.

Of course you generated a new set of problems for yourself, the day you forget to send the text it will be freezing in there

I think there is more stuff you can do via text but not looked at it to be honest.
