If you are going to put it in a box with a relay etc then I would mount a socket outlet into the box as well.

That way you could plug anything into it at will and not have to chop into cables .

You can use the heater in the winter and aircon in the summer.
Or the kettle so a cuppa is ready when you walk through the door!

So, I would find a relay / contactor with a 12v dc coil.
The weak link with those gsm boxes is that wall psu.
I would upgrade that to a new one and use it to both power the box and switch the relay

That way you could mount everything in one box with just one lead coming out and one socket.
Like the one in the photo I posted

Rightio, think I've got that now. So new 12v DC power supply for in and out of GSM box. 12v DC Output to switch relay. Relay needs a 12v DC coil. Is the amps rating of the relay for the input switch amps? Thanks for the help.

I used something like these

But only because my boxes already had din rails fitted in them.

I will post up the wiring diagram when I get home tonight but it's pretty simple.
Power coming in from the plug lead goes to the psu and one of the relay output terminals.

The 12v out from the psu powers up my remote (your gsm box) and also feeds one of the wires on the remote control relay.
The other wire from the remote control goes into my switching relay coil and the other terminal on the switching relay goes to the power socket.

I also fitted an extra socket (the black one in the photo) I can use this as an extra remote - so you could plug in a thermostat or something? I have interfaced to my tig welder so I can turn on a water cooler.
You could just fit an extra switch so you can turn on manually rather than send a text if you are already in the workshop

Good idea but am nervous about fan heaters after one was left unattended in a small yacht on its trailer, the owner was in the club house and I guess the fan had stopped but the heat didn't (faulty overheat switch ?) luckily someone spotted the smoke early enough to prevent a fire but the boat was covered inside with soot from the burning plastic case. The boat was surrounded by other boats so it could have been a disaster. They have since banned them from our club.

I'd keep an eye on how warm that gsm receiver gets, normally they run quite warm but they are in the fresh air so can lose that heat to the environment, putting it in a box will let it just get hotter.

Some vent holes might be worth while.

I bought a GSM remote controller to switch a wee fan heater on at the workshop. The model number is CL1-GSM and works a treat. Dead simple to wire up. I got a free pay as you go sim from Tesco. Simply send a text to turn it in and then a text to turn it off and it works which I'm always amazed when I wire something.

As understand it the sim has to be topped up every 6 months (£10 ?) to keep it working even if you still have loads of credit, but how do you do that when it's not in a phone ?

Years ago I fitted some to Tidal Depth Gauges that were located in the middle of the River Tay downstream from Perth. The gauges were costing the council a fortune as they couldn't be turned off and on so were sending messages over the network every few mins night and day, the first bill came in and it was in three boxes full of computer printouts
Anyway the council contacted the people who made the gauges and they said they could fit some radio receivers that would turn them on/off, they seemed to work for a while then all of a sudden they stopped, just so happened it was about the time of the G8 summit at Gleneagles so we reckoned the Police communications had been updated and were messing with the signals. The folk said there was nothing more they could do so I did some searching and came across a GSM device from Latvia, it was almost £300 at the time but the Council said it was worth a go. It was that successful that they soon told me to get another for the second gauge. The next bill that came in dropped from the initial many thousands to about £20.

They had a relay onboard plus they also have a few digital I/O. You could set up several numbers in its phonebook so that more than one person could switch it on, also it sent a text saying it was on and other saying it was off. The Sim cost next to nothing to run.

I just looked earlier and I see they are just €82 now Here they are, I think it was the BR160SM-GATE that I got.
