How about inviting the local ferret club to have a few days in the field?
I have a Sharp Innova 0.22 with telescopic sight, really powerful but a faff to pump. My problem is not being able to hit an elephant's **** with banjo.
I use Logun Penetrator pellets.

I had an innova back in the day nice little gun but as you say the pumping was a pain,My mate had a titan mohawk it was a single stroke pneumatic that was superb as i remember.

If I was in this position and didn't think I'd be needing an air rifle for much else I'd be looking at something like a s/h Weihrauch HW97 with a scope of about 4-6x.
No charging bottles or pump to bother with which will also keep the cost down. You can practice until your hearts content for the price of the pellets before going after live quarry.
The difference between .22 and .177 is about 6 yards in favour of the latter, but is you can't guarantee a head shot don't bother with either.

Excellent choice, as long as you don't have to carry it very far -- they are fairly heavy.

When I was young and only marginally daft I would have agreed with you. Now I would be buying a Weihrauch 99S and save my arms. The 97 is a heavy lump.

My eldest son is over run with rabbits and is wanting to buy an air rifle to help deal with them, What are the best suggested rifles at not too great a cost, .177' or .22" etc, any particular makes better than the rest.? Plus maybe a decent scope if needed

Gordon unless your son has lots of time on his hands its probably better to let some one deal with it for him, guys with Ferrets guns and traps will normally do this sort work for nothing. I am always being asked if I want the rabbits dealt with.

On one of my permissions there used to be half a mile of old hedge that always had rabbits, it was my "go to" place if elsewhere was quiet. The syndicate who had the game rights got someone in to ferret it and completely cleared it.
So must agree that ferrets can do a good job of peeing off shooters.

Good suggestion.

Calibre choice will always be a personal choice. I don't like .22 @12ft/lbs the trajectory is like a house brick. Even at 625+fps you can see the pellet in the scope as bumbles along in a massive arc. Good for barns and close up ratting etc. Otherwise you need a good memory for the drop every 2-5yds if you want clean kills.

Theres a difference or conflict of interest there. Farmer wants vermin gone asap. Shooter wants to manage has sport otherwise he has none

I am told they are good for bunnies, but I don't like shooting animals, I'm too soft and not confident enough so I would get the local lampers in if I had a bunny problem. I think Logun went bust? I use the pump as I use it infrequently. It is a bit of a work out I probably need to sort out the desiccant as I feel a target practise session coming on I put a new scope on it a few years ago, I can't remember the details but far better than the old one.

that's the downside and when shooting do it fast otherwise you wave all over the place . u need arms like garth

Clearing rabbits is not a one shop stop, to do it effectively you need to employ several methods. Shooting, ferreting are the best two to use you can get decent numbers in a short period of time. Also the time of year, winter is the best time. Numbers are low.

If your using an air gun practise is key, get to know where to aim at different distances. Practise judging distances, at air gun distances your estimates should be pretty close. Doesn’t matter if it’s the girly .177 or .22! I shoot a.22 and it’s no problem.

Used to have a theoben rapid in 177 great gun. Now got a Weirauch hw100 very difficult to say which is best. The HW100 has a better method of loading (lever instead of bolt)
