Pub Sign

I've still got to shoot up and concrete one of the sign posts in but next up is a new bit of fence completely from scrap. I need to "find" some decent 6mm ply to make tongues between the boards. This is going to be a "rustic" build!

For "arrows", pointing to the pub, we're torn between representations of the door hinges on the local church (a nice link), or mediaeval arrowheads.

How old i the pub? Was there ever any Butts there? If there was nothing connected to archery then I would steer clear of Medieval arrowheads. a simple straight arrow may suffice. The hinges look very confusing. What does the chief artist think?

About 500 years. Reputed old hunting lodge so the arrow heads would be in keeping.

The whole fence will be black so the lettering etc will be subtle. Not black on light wood like the renders:

Bad news on the main pub sign! One side, the paint is "bubbling". We think that's the side where the on the second coat of PU resin the resin / hardener proportions were whatever we had left.

Daughter can't do anything on it for a month due to studies so it's a case of watch this space. We might do a second sign so we can alternate / repair.

It did mind catch more people yesterday. A couple came in with a small child. They had been years ago and the chap had recently seen the new sign. They came in with the little one wanting gelato. Unfortunately it's only served from Easter until about now when the clocks change. The landlady's reasoning being there's not the trade in winter. I reckon they should at least keep a couple of flavours on. If the new sign is working then there'll be more trade wanting it surely? Whatever it's a good thing for my daughter to see in action. Landlady reckons she had about 20 hikers in the other day who's usual mo is to have their picnic in the garden then come in and have an ice cream. No ice cream but they had a drink.

Daughters studies come first! It will give you time to think of a solution. Just a thought, Could you phone Joby Carter at Carters steam fair? He does sign writing on fairground rides and they are out in all weathers. He may be able to suggest a coating that will stand up.

The hinges to show direction are a bit too vague. Call me stupid, I’ve been called worse, but presented with that on a board, I would think artyfarty sign, the fact that the orientation of the hinges was supposed to be denoting direction, wouldn’t even enter my mind…

Fair comment it was a design excercise as much as anything. Stencils done for routed arrowheads now.

Going to make a planter for the landlady out of old scaffold boards to replace what's there. Thought I might route the pub name in it. Trialled one of the 3D printed stencils. Cheap as chips, Silverline, 6mm bullnose cutter. Can't get the "THE" in but can fit RISING SUN

Thinking a flat bottomed cutter would be better.

The planter will be roughly this size. Out of scaffold boards. Joined together with stainless screws and Gorilla glue. This is exactly the same size as the original, made by some old boy long since deceased. It'll be the same but different. The routed front, radiused corners in case some old drunk / kid decides to head butt it!

The original was just filled with soil and she grew flowers in it. Obvioulsy wet soil in there will rot it out. First though creosote (the real stuff) inside and out. Second option, black bitumen paint inside, creosote outside. Third thought was to line with DPM plastic but I only have blue. then there's how to fold it in etc. Even then I reckon water would get between the DPM and timber. I'll drill drainage holes in the base whatever though not sure how many / how big.

The corners might have some builders band or similar tacked on and possibly rope handles at the end.

Any suggestions welcome!

Western red cedar does not weather rod for 50 or more years line the boxes with modern artifical slate and silicone the edges, , put in a few plastic 3D printed inverted top hat drains in the bottom . Saw some WRC side wall cladding boards off a barn conversion last week , put there over 60 years ago .
A quick sand & they look as good as new . The guy who has them is making planters with them and told me new WRC would cost about £138 for a four foot by 9 inch wide 1 inch thick length with a wavy edge on one side .
He's made a template to scroll small holed crenellations with a small router along a long curved to edge .

I used doubled up 1000 gauge poly in my homemade planters. Have the sheet massively oversize, fold n staple the inside corners. Same at the top, then finish with a capping trim

Tbh I have black bituminous paint already so think I'll go with that. She's only growing flowers in there, not stuff to be eaten.

Maybe embellish with some printed drains like @DAPPH suggested.

As a total aside I'm hoping to run two lines of 9x1mm copper tape around the top. Set slightly apart I'll have probably a copper and zinc rod in the earth of the planter. When damp it should act as an earth battery. Hoping to deter slugs and snails.

It varies! More of a nice thing to do. My latest find is this matchbox. No idea if they were something her and her late husband commissioned back when its was renowned for food, or whether it pre dates their taking the pub over some 30 years ago.
