Had a brainwave...

The original, knackered sign is 40mm wide. I've cut some 40mm strips and cut a channel 20mm wide by 3mm deep.

Thinking to stainless steel panel pin this on with some pu glue to create an outer frame. If will also serve to retain the ali/ply/ali sandwich.

This will give a 10mm deep recess. The sign can be painted or whatever onto the aluminium then the recess filled with resin...maybe.

The "white" is not a peelable film. Powder coat maybe? Whatever, it doesn't take much to sand off back to bare aluminium.

The youngest has been playing with some sign ideas. Tbh blink and you'll miss this place! Patrons have in fact remarked that they thought it was just a house with a nice garden. I'm sure having a sign will help.

The landlady thought a sign underneath the main sign might work. I'm not so sure as there's a central support post. Maybe a cantilevered arm with the sign below that?

Definitely don't go with that first image. That sun is giving the type of judgemental stare you expect from your missus once you roll in from the pub.

I cut this for someone from 3mm steel, powder coated it should last a good few years.

Went round the edge of both sides with a polystrip disc to get back to bare aluminium. Figured it'll be easier when I sand the "paint" off, not having to get into the corners. Then Gorilla glued the edging/lip on.

The very end of one long side was a bit rotten/battered so I cut it short. I'll add a little infill piece later but I have to tweak the trench depth.

Edge trim all glued and pinned on. To get the "paint" off I ended up wetting the surface and using a velcro backed Brillo type disc in a cordless drill. Couldn't get into some of the depressions where the panel pins are though. Washed it all down with soapy water and now drying off next to the boiler. There's still a few areas of white. Hoping this doesn't react with the 2-pack etch primer that's going to be rollered on next:

3 light coats of 2-pack etch primer, rollered on by one of the minions here. Still a bit wishy washy. Rough thought is to next use a household white gloss as a base?

@ukracer , debating here whether to print THE RISING SUN as screw on letters. Is ABS colour fast as in does it fade over time?

Typically, plastics will become brittle and break easily when consistently exposed to sunlight. ABS prints warp when left in the sun for a long period.

ABS plastic sheets are also not UV resistant and will fade or deteriorate when exposed to sunlight.

I was/am, very wary whether the acrylic paint will stick, long term to the white gloss base. Maybe that was the wrong base though it is acrylic gloss. She didn't key it like I suggested. It's been on a couple of days and sun baked in this glorious weather.

Hoping to get a broken Cricut machine very shortly that's an easy repair. Will use that for the letter stencils.

Looking forward to buying and pouring the clear acrylic resin over it.

We have a modern 1920's industrial scene oil painting in our lounge that has had 3 mm of clear resin poured over the picture which also had a sprinkling of sand in places , to make counterfeiting difficult .
It's about 15 years old and as yet has no signs of yellowing

This is going to sit, open to the elements on the North Downs over 200m above sea level. Signs don't last long here!
