Primer and paint for trailer chassis

Hi, I am giving a trailer a spruce up. It's mor about protecting it than asthetics. I have knocked off flaky paint and rust with a wire brush by hand and on angle grinder. Situation /prep is far from perfect squeezing underneath.

My usual painting routine would be red oxide primer then whatever metal paint I had or can get hold of.. Being as I have run out of both is there another primer paint combo I should consider? Or another method?

Paint will probably be brushed on underneath due to access and sprayed everywhere else I can

just get a decent affordable brushing primer/rust inhib.....
then any decent priced metal paint....unless it's changed DONT get Hamerite.....
spend a little money on a decent 2,1/2" / 3" brush.....
dont bother spraying to much mess......
what ever u do in a year or so it will all peel again.....
I've had good luck with paint from ebay in the past.....
just have a look in yelow pages etc to c if there's a paint manufacture's near u.....u'll get decent paint with out the fancy sticker prices....but u wont want that much.....
lastly.....
I find if u leave the fresh paint alone for at least 3 days to really harden off....
This is all I ever do to my out building frame work n projects....

I used this on my car and it's excellent for the price.

Just remember to leave it stood for 10 minutes after mixing.

Brushes on really well.

Its all in the prep, not much point in spending on decent paint if the preps not right. Can you not up end the trailer?

You may not be aware, but that is merely red paint. The real stuff became unavailable a long time ago.

No i didn't. It's a case of my dad used r d oxide, I learnt to Use red oxide. I am never interested in painting beyond some protection to the elements so never looked into it

Not really unfortunately. I am not bothered about aesthetics more about protecting the metal. Are you thinking down to shinny steel level of prep as you would for welding? Lots of nooks and crannys on c section steels round bolts makes it difficult etc

A wire brush polishes rather than abrades. If you clean the area, remove all the loose material and then clean it again, epoxy should be fine and will encapsulate it. No oxygen = no rust. A needle gun would be an ideal tool to use.

Never used 2 Pak before. I always thought you needed full on air feed reparator? I have fp2 mask and one of the 3m models that takes lots of different cartridges. I'm not safety Nancy by any stretch but lungs I am precious over!

2K is just Zwei Komponent in German. It means nothing more in English either. To assess the need for air fed or other PPE, the information is in the TDS and safety sheets for the medium proposed. The word you are looking for is "Isocyanates". It is when converted to an airborne mist which can be breathed in, that the danger from it is present. You can brush or roller it on without the full air fed system in most cases. All epoxy primers of my experience are Isocyanate free.

There is a very useful thread entitled something like "I learnt my lesson using 2K" which tells of the consequences of not reading the information provided by the manufacturer.

I think the EP has Isocyanate hardener, I used a none air fed mask.

As said above I think it's when you are spraying it in aerosol form that it is most dangerous.

Best check the safety data sheet of the paint and the hardener but I've not heard of a paint having both isocyanate and epoxy curing agents simultaneously.

I was doing a small paint job a couple of weeks ago in the shed i've got two extracter fans one large one small so on i went with the job mask on a 3M thought that will do the job and it did for the face. the bad mistake was not understanding the paint as i have always used 2K. It wasnt till i woke up in hospital that i was told that I had to be brought back to life as my lungs had shut down and didnt know that it contains isocyante or something like that so it's celluloss from now on.

Epoxy primer is normally isocynate free and is safe to brush on.
Same goes for machinery enamel. Just apply it in a well ventilated area.

Any fumes are no worse than an oil based paint you would use on your outside door.

that is a epoxy not a iso 2k so you are good without airfed.

however your application case suits a epoxy mastic not a epoxy primer.

far more corrosion resistant than any normal epoxy primer, does not have to be overcoated. can be ordered tinted. it will last far longer than a normal epoxy with less than ideal prep. in fact it even says that in the instructions.

normally there are multiple people on here advocating for it. imho any other product is simply unsuitable for your useage case.

the rest of the advise is good. you need to remove all loose material and a needle gun is the ideal first step.

Also qwakerssome good info. I will see how much a needle gun is as I have a good air supply and they look good to get into those awkward places.

I used this when I built a new trailer a few years back.

Pardon our interruption...

Just brushed on then a silver enamel paint on top.
Have an older trailer which could do with a repaint so I'd be happy to use the same on it.
Actually used the remains of it recently to paint the underside of my lawnmower deck.
Wore a non air fed filter mask and plenty of ventilation with the garage doors open.
