well lads iv,e been sort of busy on site lately, no pics im afraid, but honestly some of what i have been producing has been sort of special for me. now im back at the shop working on a hot water module. heres a few pics. terry im sorry about the pc you also jay, i work with some very talented young lads ,you are a match for anyone i have met, the work you show i think is proof of your talent, and deserves mention, trust me your eyes will fade but the tempo you have developed will never leave you.

i like the way you can bend that rod to get your paws out the way from the falling sparks,only wish i could do it with lo-highs,only the other week i had slag fall on my glove (then through were the stiching had come apart) and frazzled between my middle two fingers,it took an age to fe**ing age to heal.

cheers danny, these are shots of some root work, some of these spools look alike but i think at the end you will realize what they are all about. as i mentioned at the start this is hot water so there really isn,t a lot of pressure pardon the pun, in getting quality welds. f/j

Firstly let me appologies for spelling and the lenght of this questioning.
i am a pipefitter welder been in HVCA 7 years .

i am wanting to improve my mma welding currently unless it is being tested ie 10% of welds we just rolly polly them root and camp using 6013s for both running positive electrode. if you could please help witht he following i would appricate it

would i be better using a 6010/6011 for root on negative electrode. including for rollypolly welds. could you also shed your oppion on welding like this ie rollypolly for pipe to 3 bar .

for caps i believe it is better on pos electrode would i be better using 6013, 7018, 7016 although could you please give indication on how expense these hi los would be ie filarcs 56s i think these are 7018 .

another question sorry when doing full peno welds currenlty with 6013 i set up a 2.5 gap and face altthought i think this is to wide as my onion opens to wide so i have to break the arc and have amp at about 68 .

Rooting with cellulosics (6010) is generally done on electrode positive, certainly the case with something like Fleetweld 5P. Filarc 56S is a 7016, excellent rod for rooting as the thin coating allows you much better access to the root gap than the 7018 with it's thicker coating, also 7016 is less fluid than 7018 and freezes quicker, rooting is easier to control on electrode negative, followed by fill and cap with electrode positive.

Your setup for 6013 of 2.5mm root gap and 2.5mm root face seems a little tight and doesn't leave much leeway for closure, personally i like a minimum gap of 3.25-4mm and a face of about 3mm. Some 6013 burn better on positive and others on negative, the 6013 we use at work are Bohler Fox Sum, i believe FJ uses these also, Bohler recommends negative all the way with these, and they do run MUCH better on negative.

Personal choices regarding rod choice, polarity, fitup etc. are generally irrelevant as all of these parameters should be specified in the welding procedure in place.

could you tell me what rods size and make and what amps f/j or your self would be running to get the cap to curl off in that way. my flanges do this but we only weld upto 4" on a reqular basis, would they more likely curl up on larger pipe or do your caps curl even on 2"/3" thanks again always

Beautiful work Flange Jockey, Your definitley the Irish answer to that guy Engloid. ( At least thats what I think he was called) Seeing your peelers on that spool piece is definitley inspiring! I used to work with some cracking pipe guys but I dont think they could consistently produce work like yours. All I seem to be welding at the moment is buckets and more buckets............!

alwayswelding, your questions are just a little too long winded for me to answer as i am restricted to keyboard time. busa has already given you a very good reply and amps etc are mentioned all through this and the other thread. im sorry but i dont really know the price of rods, though i would imagine lo/hi rods will be more expensive. as regards electrode neg on root filler and cap, its just the approach i am most comfortable with, try both you will find what suits you, this is also my approach with 6010 cel rods. james as always thanks, heres a few more. f/j

Alwayswelding, you state your a pipey/welder for seven years, many of the questions you ask should have been covered within welding course work while you attended college as an apprentice. Same for polarity with various brand rods, when you mention root face & gap, you make no reference rod thickness, 10 or 12,s? These little points make a huge difference for others to give an educated reply.

I,m assuming you have valid SummitSkill weld certs, or have they expired?
