I'm sorry if I'm missing a trick but are most of the welds pictured on the last few pages actually arc welds or TIG welds? I assumed they were all arc welds, given this is the arc welding section of the forum but then I spotted a TIG torch! Now, I'm totally confused, although still very impressed, whatever they are.

If you go back to F/J's very first post George, you will view a pipe weld rooted with tig, then filled & capped using arc. A lot of pipe spool work commands nailing together using tig root and mma cap. Then you may find pip rooted with 6011's & capped 6013's.
Last post you view root & cap tig all the way, yes an arc section, but original post under title of "PIPE" this is an excellent threat where members, skilled or not so skilled can view how the business is done in the real world!!
F/J re: gap, I demonstrate to my laddies method I prefer, then it is down to them to experiment to find a method that suits them best to complete pipe or plate to a good standard, this is what I like about welding, it is down to each individual to seek out what is good for him/her.

F/J - Both your arc and TIG caps look immaculate. They're quite hard to tell apart, appearance-wise, to my untrained eye. Do you decide on arc or TIG caps, depending on the job, or have you switched to using TIG for nearly all caps, more recently? And do you ever use MIG for caps on pipe joints and, if not, why not?

runnach, that really is a very good answer, im sure you have noticed in the past guys on these boards, ( not so much here) having a row over the proper approach to a certain butt. i can really get out of hand, just recently on an american board a number of guys, mostly inspectors were getting heated over which was easier to perform stick, or tig.
that one was a pleasure to read, though i did learn who the pr##ks were, i asked the question who would win a fight between Spiderman and batman, the first reply SUPERMAN. amen. george im just not familiar enough with mig to use it, i do know some lads who have used it for pipe though i havn,t seen any of this work, i do realize i have confused things a bit by posting tig work on an arc section, but as runnach mentions the title was pipe, and this was just a natural progression from tig roots. just as busa mentions we follow a similar approach as regards tig right out only in our case, up to 3" conditions permitting. stick caps will always be my preferred approach. heres a little more tig work. f/j

f/j, Those last pics with blue markings on the pipe - is that BS 1387 medium weight? Or do you have different schedules in Ireland? The reason I ask is 3 runs of TIG on a low pressure pipe like that seems a bit excessive/uneconomical. By the way I wish I could peek through your screen when you are running those caps - very tidy. W/A

WA i know the stuff you are talking about, blue band seamed pipe, no this was a seamless sch 40 pipe, the blue paint, i cant answer. it would take some fancy footwork to fit 4 runs into a blueband butt, thats how many runs there were on these pipes, those were just the fillers i showed in the last post, heres the caps. everything was welded at the same amps around 130. f/j

hope you kept at the trade mike. W,A i cant find any blue band welding, i would imagine root and filler cap, two runs. this is a pipe similar in thickness to blue band, its seamless, medium pressure steam, it should give an idea of my approach to light pipe. f/j

cheers bones, the first pic here is the end of a capping run, i noticed these other pics show im leaving the cap on the right side with each rod, look for that greenish look at the end its usually a good indication of the correct amps. each new rod is in my case, started just above and down into the crater on the right. f/j

brendan, i agree with you on overkill, the first time i was asked to take this approach i asked the boss if his head was light, im not sure what books the engineer in question reads but for these lines this is what he wanted. i suppose i can,t complain i get a little practice.i have a few pics of some flat work ive been doing ill post them on the other thread. f/j

brendan, your question put another thing into my mind ,as regards tig right out. it ties in with woozes inquiry. i went looking for the old see fe machine, the machine i was most familiar with and found it out the back of the shop, deaded. some years back the company employed a few kick ass tig hands who were kinda high on the amps 
theres my proof, they did get us new machines though, and happy to say they stuck around. here you go wooz. f/j

on a serious note, you should try to arrange a test drive using STT, no rooting with tig, STT all the way, nigh on impossible not to achieve wedding ring on root side. Quicker too, less time with bin down = quality time!!Cheers........
