My cousin is visiting from 200 miles away,with his school friend,he’s had the mk3 from new,it got hit up the back in ‘81,bought it back for a tenner and vowed to return it to the road,which he did two years ago,he and his friend had a10’s in the sixties,his friend still has his and uses it.View attachment 500831

Many Many Many years ago I used to sell a lot of used Mini 850cc automatics, they were all blue, maybe teal blue? rather gutless........................

Luckily we never got 850 autos over here. It's funny though that all autos had a HS4 carb including 850s but the manuals only had a HS2 until much later on.

Never seen a mini badged as 'Morris Mini Matic' before, was this a standard badge in Australia or a home made version?

Basically all minis here were sold under the Morris name until about 1970 when they started to switch them all to the "Clubman" front and used the Leyland name. There was a short time when round nose minis were sold as Leylands. The autos were only available here in 1967, 1968 and 1969. Took my Uncle for a spin last night. A combined age of 192 and both still going strong! He hadn’t seen this car before so a nice surprise for him.

The 850cc automatic was never offered to the public, I bought a load of them at the MOD sales at Ruddington? The ones I could get running we drove home in convoy, one with working lights at the front, trade plate attached, one at the back with working rear lights and the rear trade plate attached! They issued them to disabled ex service personnel, much better option than the light blue two stroke things!

Fun fact. - The front subframe for the auto is different to the manual, the offside side rail the engine mount bolts to is flatter / further away So fitting a manual engine and Gearbox is needing a spacer to cater for that. If you don't notice that and press on regardless, the mounts fail in short order.

It’s a 1922 Panhard et Levassor.

We weren’t really looking for another car but three interesting cars came on the market around the same time last year that caught our attention. The Panhard was up for auction first and we threw a daft bid on it and won it… the car was previously sold in France as a barn find to a UK bidder in 2020. He had an interest in ‘Oily Rag’ cars and undertook the recommissioning to get it on the road. In our ownership we’ve had the brakes relined, wheels checked over (I repaired at present) by a wheelwright and done various bits such as adding the spot light and making a flag for the flagstaff. Probably done around 250 miles in it now.

There’s a roll of carpet under the front wheel that I throw under there to catch any residual drips as there’s a little intermittent weep that needs addressed. Rear wheel does have a tool bag acting as a chock - just to be sure - as I’ve not got great faith in the steel parking brake!

It is, restored in Italy and l cannot see any rot repairs so l think a light resto.

I reckon this qualifies as old and rare these days. It's from 2001 and I think there are only 200 or so left in the UK. My new Peugeot 406 coupe arrived today - it's the manual V6 version. It has been off the road for a few years and does need a little recommissioning but it's better than I thought it would be. I've been out doing a bit of diagnostics and hopefully disconnecting the non-communicating sat nav ecu will have fixed the current draw and new coils will fix the cylinders that don't work. Should that go well it should just be cam belt, brakes and tyres and then drive it to see if anything else goes wrong.
