@brightspark he might know of another way to test different areas of the welder

other problem is transformer based so its test between each wire transformer side of it to ground could be earthing out via this side so blowing the fuse every time

Does it still trip with its master on/off switch to off? Mine tripped the RCD when "off", the mains terminals on the top go through a paxolin plate with insulator gaskets each side - on mine the insulators were damp and it was enough to trip the RCD, I replaced 'em with some closed-cell foam and it sorted it, but be careful removing the old gaskets, they're likely to be asbestos-based so hoover the carp as you scrape them off!

If that's not the problem, you could bake the transformer out in case it's got damp - put a box around it and turn a heat gun on it for an hour or more worked for me! Bloody English Weather, raining on it....

Mine's now in use as the 240 - 415 isolating transformer for my phase converter, it's fed from a 40A type-D after a 30 mA RCD and hasn't ever tripped it....

I dont do a whole lot of welding, this welder was left to me by my dad who passed away 13 years ago.
Maybe it's time for an upgrade

You can see whether it's the transformer winding or the rest of the gubbins, follow the primary wire (thinner ones, go to the mains terminals and the "blade" on-off switch), unbolt and move 'em clear so they're not going to short on anything, apply power withthe mains swich "on" - if it still trips it's in the switchgear, if not put the meter on MOhms (forthest clockwise of the resistance ranges) - or better a Megger "insulation tester") on the winding ends and the chassis and see what you get.

With the top off is fine, just don't weld without the oil cooling

Is I was to buy a new welder what is recommended, I will probably be replacing the sills on this girl over the winter. Budget is very tight though, gassless mig maybe?
