That’s a tangential type insert. Great strength and good finish. So I ended up buying a 3 x 32mm tool and holder new from eBay it came with some Seco inserts and after a few trial cuts it seems to perform better than the last tool. firstly because it’s more rigid and the Seco inserts seem to form the chip better than the Chinese ones.

the fastest parting tool is a hacksaw with the lathe running just stop before the final bit otherwise you wrap your knuckles in the chuck

Quicker to use a grinder and slitting disc, with the lathe running!the fastest parting tool is a hacksaw with the lathe running just stop before the final bit otherwise you wrap your knuckles in the chuck
animal and all that grinding dust on the bed and in the chuckQuicker to use a grinder and slitting disc, with the lathe running!
Didnt say I did it, said it was quicker. Though I do confess to once using a flap disc on something in the lathe with it running. But I did cover the bed with fire blanket and it wasnt my lathe. We had shortened a half shaft for a trike, welded it up, spun it in the lathe to check it was straight. The sleeve wouldnt slide into place, didnt have heat, so the shaft got polished. Id have taken a cut but he had no tools worth using, only those garbage brazed on machine mart jobbies.animal and all that grinding dust on the bed and in the chuck
give the hacksaw a good rogering with cutting compound on and a mid speed on lathe and it wontA parting tool will slaughter a hacksaw in speed any day of the week, well assuming you have a decent parting tool and a lathe with some rigidity.
