Manufacturing as it once was isnt going to come back here any time soon. Its easy to sell off, dismantle, restructure, scrap. You can drive wages downwards with inflation over years. That means cheap labour, But the working conditions associated with really cheap wont be allowed to return here. Look at some of the videos on machine shops in Pakistan, Life itself there is cheap & theres no help from the state when you get hurt, maimed or crippled.
I cant see those working practices ever being allowed here again (Thank God!)

Suppose like everyone they sell to the highest bidder! A scrap ship full of scrap to the far east is fairly common.
One of my neighbours travels to China regularly, he works for a Dutch big engineering and shipbuilding outfit. From his descriptions of China in the industrialised regions they used our old stuff to build very modern efficient industry. Even down to the electric cars and charging infrastructure.
Guess the big difference is the ample supply of cheap non argumentative labour, a government style of just do it, and do it now. Rather than our dilly dather lets try to please everyone culture, which as we know slows progress and spirals cost.

And the government here taxes factories into submission and modern pc thought sees manufacturing as evil and employers as the evil elite

Where I live,
Tech college is now housing
Park is now housing
Industrial estate is housing soon
Shipping centre is being demolished for tower blocks . They say good news as 11000 jobs but it will be 11k out of town jobs short term with the loss of area employment and they say cars are evil but now you’ve got To go out of town for food
I’m looking forward to being dead so I don’t have to endure this nonsense

i beg to differ but it comes with a price that many wont like not even on this forum

the issue has always been tax ( import tax )

and all of us buying foreign gear the likes of amazon and the others

driving license done in india instead of the uk, banks sending your details abroad to hold and sort out your finances, phonecalls switchboards most are abroad plenty of uk jobs gone there

data should be held on uk shores it stops data fraud to a massive degree as the jail term matches

uk white night washing machines, dryers, fridges, freezers crippled by imports cheaper than what we can make them for ( import tax )
we have brexit at moment what many wanted, everythings gone up when we should have hit imports with a tax as its done the same thing

carpets flooded uk we lost many companies as many owners bought cheap carpets instead of british made
its the same for clothing, bedding, curtains all flooded with cheap imports

Factories employ everyone from cleaners , drivers , production staff, skilled workers, engineers, admin etc
Proper manufacturing supplies education and apprenticeships, degree sponsorship.
Factories can offer the chance of progress

Shops are dying, warehouses are becoming more automated. It’s not good

Motor industry repeating in every industry…if consumers want cheap, someone will supply it. People caused it and poor industrial management. People buying cheap, and companies not modernising to compete with cheap imports!

My everyday work clothes is a linnen shirt and jeans.

From an economic perspective mass manufacturing isn't the best model for a country. It's considered low value and pushes down wages as manufacturing goes to the lowest bidder.

In my time in education one thing stuck out. Kids liked making stuff some were better than others some were good & some awful but 95% enjoyed it really wanted to make something. But the way the practical subjects & curriculum have been emasculated you could see the realisation in their eyes when it dawned that actually we cant make anything useful or nice at school anymore cos its too expensive & not enough time as its virtually all theory & no making.
So those that are academically good go to uni & non manual jobs, the rest are on the scrapheap before they even start.
If mass manufacturing isnt a good economic model for a country, a service econonmy isnt either. There needs to be a balance between the two.

I know of a plater who moved to South Korea when the work dried up here, he didn't go alone. He worked on the Wembley Arch back in the day, amongst other stuff. Builds ships in Busan now.
