Pagid brake pads

Jap stuff I've never worked on, I'm surprised really - I'd have thought they'd be more advanced than that but the Leaf has been around for 15 years so maybe they used whatever they had in the parts bin at the time, the Volvo brakes shown are the same design as used on old Mondeo's, which had a requirement for lubrication in the same location. I note the BMW instructions are 18 years old, so yes, 'in the past', there was a requirement for lubrication (not a slathering in copperslip though).

Because this is where all the noise issues come for me - when I put just pads in...


This from the man who just put a set of front pads in only on one of the little Citigos I use for a loaner/courtesy car - I been running round in myself!

also guilty, new bake pads had nt arrived in time forr mot , so rumaged around and found a set of half worn, cleaned the backing plates, de glazed the friction , wipe on Wipe Off lithium on back plates (this is just rust preventative) , cleaned and greased sliders(lithium) and of to the mot , discs are now perfect shiny and it flew through with no advisories,happy days.

My 1995 S280 Mercedes imported from Singapore still has the original brake discs and pads on it. 44k miles.

I removed the pads for inspection and clean up. Original date stamp, perfect condition and still a good 8 - 10mm life in them. The car was getting valued for insurance and the MB club guy nearly wet himself - thought it was really cool and I agree

the truck had new discs, probaly less than 3k on them, no lip, but the pads were none existent, literally paper thin ! weird how some people work/think eh.

My other half point out the front brakes on the integrale squealed - a common thing.

I am amused at all the "apply grease" illustrations - I don't think one says "slather back of pad in copperease so anything rubber remotely near it will fail . ."

Some of you would be horrified at the calipers on Lancia Betas. Disc brakes all round, none of this fancy rubber booted greased slider pin thing . . . Single pot calipers retained by metal wedges held in by an R-clip either end. Until you worked out the correct way, getting the first one in at the top (or bottom) was pretty easy. Getting the other end in seemed to require a hammer.

Getting them out often did. Not much free to slide movement going on there. But fantastic brakes.

Going back to "fake brakes" I knew a guy worked for Mintex (yes @bricol I knew the factory at Cleckheaton and no, you wouldn't know it was there unless someone took you) anyhow, they have an R&D department as do most serious manufacturers. One thing they did was buy competitors products to compare, he told me several stories about the compounds on some of the "budget" brands and they were all horror stories. One particular tale involved finding grass was one of the ingredients of a compound, he never did tell me which brand, just that it was from India. I have carefully read the Country of origin label ever since.

Bit strange this thread popping up as I am currently doing my own brakes, for the first time in a long time and so far no dramas.

This is why I go on about using the correct grease on brake rubbers-


These had previously been greased using Bosch brake grease, which I'm pretty sure is identical to Pagid brake grease.
The full length rubber had swollen enough to cause it to bind on the stainless slide, with the short boot swollen to the point it wasn't sealing so the steel slide had corroded.

For reference, Brembo supply Fuchs HLT2 grease as part of these slide kits.

Silicone grease is all you need for the slide pins that doesn’t affect the rubbers. I use Permatex Silicone Extreme grease but many variants out there.
Red rubber grease is often recommended but never lasts long so you’ll be lubricating the pins much more often

I tend to use the red rubber grease only on the piston seals when reassembling calipers and silicone grease on the pins.

Another home mechanic here:

Silicone grease for the slides.
Silicone spray for the piston boot, so it doesn’t follow the piston round when you wind it in.
Copper grease on the pad ‘ears’.

Whenever I’ve bought a secondhand car, it’s always had seized pads (road salt up here +++), so they always get the above, after a proper clean of the hangers. The pads never seem to seize again, so that’s why I do it. Might be more of a superstition!

I couldn't be arsed to repair them so fitted two new calipers. All lubed up, lovely.
