Pagid brake pads

EBC do not make their own brake pads.
A local motor factor got a tour around one of the European factories that make brake pads. In the warehouse he saw pallets of pads labelled ready to go to various big name brake suppliers, among them was Ferodo and EBC!

I'm a fan of the pagid motorsport pads. The pagid blue are the best pad I've ever used but a bit spendy!

Grinding brake pads to fit is a clear sign something is wrong.

I won't tell you then, about thirty years ago I found out my GS rear pads were almost identical to the early Civic front pads, except for a bit of hacksaw and grinding work...

even after thorough cleaning of calipers I find it rare that the backing plates fit perfect, most require the paint chunks at least off , I make sure they are a good fit with out hammering them in , if you don t how are they meant to return after brake pressure off? sure way to lower mpg . never use copper slip , so many times I have unsiezed pins and they have congealed mass of now solid gunge jamming them. wipe of lithium when cleaned ,and thats it . tried denso pads they seem good , take a while to bed in but after that fine,so far !.

This was a memorable job on my Merc S600. 24 brake piston car. Front brakes have common problem of corrosion bulging out the plates and jamming brake pads which this one suffered from when I bought the car.

Someone had been there before and stripped all fasteners. Some electric glue was applied:



















Who needs good brakes on a 2.5 tonne V12 anyway? Some difference when this was done.

This has been my experience too - even "quality" branded pads are not precision made and often need a bit of fettling to get them to move smoothly.
Would they still "work" if you just jammed them in? Yeah probably unless they are really bad, but any sticking is going to lead to dragging on the disc and/or uneven wear.

I'll usually pull the stainless shims off the callipers and clean everything up anyway before refitting.
If using copper grease then it needs to be the lightest barely visible smear on the back of the pads and stainless shims.
More importantly pop the sliding pings out and check for corrosion, clean and regrease with a smooth silicone grease as required, and don’t over fill – slider pin issues have been the cause of most of the sticking brake issues I've encountered.

I scrape the corrosion off the caliper bodies with a screwdriver as it can 'grow' making the it tight, it can be pretty hard.
I've recently gone over to the silicone brake grease from good old copper slip as I think it helps more with the squealing.

excuse my ignorance , what sort of coating is on the discs? or is it light spray to keep tidy which obviously burns straight of on pad contact , either way decent brakes , used to like the four pot brembo s on my iveco daily ..then they cut corners and went to single piston sliders(crapolini) .

Just a coat of paint.
If you're lucky, it might be high temperature paint.

Just a coat of paint.

It's a coated brake disc. Anti corrosion coating from the factory. Wears off the pad wear surface very quicky with no I'll effects. The coating means the hat and other non contact parts of the disc stay rust free for longer.

Coated discs are fairly standard on Mercedes cars.

Carefull with copper grease - yer average piston dust seal doesn't like it and will swell and fail . . . and yes, I too have used it for years with no problems, until relatively recently.

In a previous life (20 pluis years ago) we used to alignment tooling for BBA (Mintex etc) to stick the anti-squeal shims on the back of the pads. We also did a coating line for coating an painting the back plates - I somehow doubt that is still operating, so I'm not taking any responsibility for paint blobs.

We also machined down a load of over-thick pads for them once - something set up wrong and they made a good few thousand before noticing.

A mate same age as me worked for them for a time. An older mate worked for them a long time ago - talks of front struts from a Zephyr coming through the bonnet after one too many brake test runs . . .

It's not just copper grease, and not just caliper seals.
I've seen various greases that are sold as 'rubber safe' for brake use (most prominent one being the Pagid one!), also swell caliper slide boots.
And then there's those who use release oil on the caliper boots of parking brake calipers so the boot doesn't stick when winding back, which also swells the boot.

Only thing that I'll use on slides, is the white/clear silicon grease supplied with slide kits, and if needed, some silicon or teflon spray on caliper boots.

Perhaps they just use cheap rubber for brake slider boots? Theres lot of oil/grease resistant rubbers about.

My sliders were dry and starting to rust, cleaned up light abraisive then a thick dollop of standard bearing grease.

If used in slide pins, copper grease and lithium based greases will solidify and seize the slide after a year or so.
They also go tacky, so if you have a pin with a rubber dampening sleeve on it they're even more prone to binding, and chances are you'll rip the sleeve when you do have to next remove the pin.

The silicon based greases that are supplied with slide pin kits, don't cause any of those issues.

I bought a tin last year after simply being unable to find the previous tin that was barely used.
I was sure the (*&(*&& who took my Toyota away had taken the copper grease, too.
Guess what I found a few weeks ago?

Back in the days when I had my Audi dealer serviced they always added sachets of Plastilube to almost every invoice irrespective of working on the brakes or not. Obviously some sort of magic profit margin increasing grease to lubricate the customers' wallet.
