I clamp mine to the leg of the bench when i need it not to move about.
One thing often overlooked when mounting a vice is the position of the rear jaw in relation to the bench front edge so anything long pointing down doesn't touch the bench. Not so sure about pedestal mounting a vice for cutting and filing if there is any flex in the upright.
That's exactly how I did both mine and my dads, its such a pita if you don't.Handy tip. I shall remember to clamp a bit of bar in the vice before mounting it!
That must me a typo, If that tube is 14"dia then the vice is nearly 6 feet long.
A vice pedestal is a brilliant idea to keep your bench clear. The only other options I could come up with were to have the vice easily removable with either the ball lock bolts used in Bluco/Siegmund/Devian/stronghand tables or have a woodworkers vice and a real vice to be clamped in it.
Judging by your other shop pics I thought you would have all ready had a wide selection of nuts and bolts for every occasion, it just looks so organised. Finally set mine up today, though slightly annoyed as I was clever and tried to order just the right length bolts. And failed to take into account the washers. Fiddlesticks. Still, they've done up, just, and 60mm ones are on order. I dare say I'll find a use for these in due course...

Mine's not far off the leg to be fair, but with enough space either side that the position doesn't inpair the workplace.i put my vice directly over the the leg so i can knock 6 shades of sh ,, te out on it![]()
Lol, yes, going through the "misc" nuts and bolts bin is on the list, need to split things up a bit more. Sadly I don't have much stock of nuts & bolts, normally just buy them in for the job (plus a few for spares) so still in the accumulation phase of workshop life. Besides, I'll probably be moving soon, so will have to uproot everything again. Top priority is Man Cave for the new place! (You may be asking, why on earth I am moving, well, the present place I own with my mother, but my Gran died recently so I finally have the cash to buy somewhere comparable myself, yay for no mortgage!)Judging by your other shop pics I thought you would have all ready had a wide selection of nuts and bolts for every occasion, it just looks so organised.
What about angle iron braces every foot to beef it up?looking at building myself a more substantial bench for welding. i cant seem to find much over 5mm plate for the top though, any suggestions on places to get thicker plate or should i just pad the underneath out with wood then a thinner plate on top ?
yes im considering that it maybe cheaper to brace more often than to increase the thickness of plate.
the other option i thought about it flat bar, Can get 6 metres of 60x10 for 50 odd quid, only need about a metre of bench so could probably to it in sections for 100 quid
