TDV6? Is this the exhaust balance pipe or fuel rail one? Either way it doesn't surprise me, but that engine is a good one to shop round on as the LION V6 is used in a lot of different vehicles - Jag's, Citroens, Peugeots as well as Ford & LR![]()

Thanks, appreciate it. Not sure which way I will jump yet. I like the car, not a patch on the Legacy but...
I think it is the diff that is going, actually thought it was a wheel bearing on nearside but jacked up that side and put in gear and no noise. Jacked up the other and the noise was there, went under the car and could't hear the noise, or it was really faint but inside the car it was loud so must be travelling through the
Tell me about it and I never even swapped anything.Abs unit will take a fit if you change the gear ratios. I've done diesel gearbox into petrol cars a few times on VWs and it's not a straight forward swap.
No, definitely not the wheel bearing. I can be sure for 2 reasons, first is the noise is coming from the left hand side when sitting in the car, diff is just left of centre and secondly the wheel bearing is new(ish).Sounds to me like it’s probably the O/S wheel bearing?
This is why vehicles now use the ABS hall sensors to figure out road speed now![]()
Thank goodness for that, I was starting disbelieve my memoryUp to 2005 Passat is longidual mounted, 2005 on is transverse. If it's a 2.0tdi then it's transverse, 2.0tdi was never fitted to the pre 05 model
If you look in your service book or at the sticker in the boot you'll find the transmission code. They did give issues with diff bearings, if you want to be sure before dropping the cash on a box just run it through the gears with the 2 driveshafts removed.
Somewhere (probably around the spare wheel well under the carpet) will be a sticker; it lists the VIN, all the accessories and the engine & gearbox codes. I can't remember for sure but I think the gearbox codes are 3 letters like the engine, your engine is probably a BMN if it's a 170 (have the same in my Golf).
Once you know your gearbox code you can try and find a replacement, as long as the code is the same it will work. Petrol and diesel are definitely different ratios and will confuse the ABS (and cruise control if you have it) as already said.
