Now I have a problem with the power in the garage!

Personally I'd just disconnect the cable feeding the garage at both ends and then test the cable....then test the ring in the garage separately (while the feed is disconnected).

Testing when everything is connected up is a bit difficult I reckon.

If you have any sort of conduction between the LNE with the cable disconnected then you have a cable problem (assuming the cable has no accessory boxes....if it does these should be disconnected and each cable length tested)

so when you measure the DP switch its definitely open circuit and functioning and when its unwired its not shorting internally?

have you unwired the dp switch and taken the supply cable out at the CU and confirmed the supply cable isnt damaged

no that is the next job to remove the L and N from the switch in the house and re check the resistance between the L N + E if there is resistance then I know it is a problem with the cable. The garage DP switch is in the bin now! it was working fine no continuity between L + N

I found no faults on the garage ring with my multi meter, but that does not mean there aint one!

the supply was just turned off in the house and the wires disconected from the garage end,

no the DP switch in the CU would not turn back on so i broke it trying!

It is feed from henly blocks to the switch TBH I am not sure what size fuse is in there, 30amp perhaps old school ceramic with fuse wire, the cable is well looks like the old meter tails red and black probably 25mm2

thats the main witch in the consumer unit, no protection no it is part of the split load box that then feeds the RCD

when i turned it off to isolate the board it would not turn back on afterwards. its now broken

So at the moment, this fault has:-
1, shown as a ring fault tripping an RCD and MCB
2, a possible supply cable fault.
3, a Faulty main switch in garage board.

Are you sure the outdoor heater is not on the rcd, that must be more vulnerable than the indoor circuits.

Positive mate only half of the board has RCD protection. I could move it over though

Or just take it out of circuit at the DB and re test. I have seen plenty of commercial boards that have been miss labelled or the attached sheet has been wrongly updated including a new 32A supply I had fitted for a Christie Micro Tile video wall which would randomly trip the MCB turns out it was not a new circuit sparkie had just used the supply to a hand dryer and re labelled it as Video Wall and each time the hand dryer was used...

It is deffianly not I put this consumer unit in the garage to replace the old re wireable ceramic fuses. The heater is on its own 16amp breaker on the non RCD side of the CU.

36 ohms across the pos and neg looks like a problem underground. This is a old 60 amp fused switch.

Scrap that cable from house to garage is fine. Looks like there is is a problem with the old lighting ring in the garage mostly old fluorescent fittings. Some newer halogen. But this old.meter has continuity across the L and N i presume that is normal and that is how it works
